Rail workers to strike over bank holiday

Rail workers on First Great Western trains are to stage a series of strikes, including over the August bank holiday weekend.

The RMT has announced the strikes following a row over the introduction of the new Hitachi trains.

The RMT says the new trains will mean a threat to jobs, services and passenger safety.

RMT members have been told not to work from 12.01am-11.59pm on Sunday 23 August and again between 12.01am on Saturday 29 August and 11.59pm on Monday 31 August.

Tony Hawks to host first Cathedral quiz night

Comedian and author Tony Hawks is to host Exeter Cathedral’s first ever Big Quiz Night.

Tony, who is regular on the Radio Four show I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue and is author of several best selling books, including Round Ireland with a fridge, will host the evening on 1st October.

Teams of up to eight are invited to enter for a limited number of available spaces.

The ticket price also includes a hog roast from Kenniford Farm. And no quiz would be complete without a licensed bar to help fuel those thinking caps!

Appeal after cars keyed at Devon station

Officers from British Transport Police are appealing for information and witnesses after a number of cars were ‘keyed’ at Tiverton Parkway rail station.

Between Thursday, 12 March, and Monday, 6 July, there have been six incidents of criminal damage to motor vehicles.

They all involved cars being deliberately scratched along the sides, and in one case also on the bonnet.

Tributes for motorcyclist killed in A38 crash

A motorcyclist who died following a collision on the A38 near Tiverton on Monday 27 July has been named as 23-year-old Anthony Roberts, from Witheridge.

Emergency services were called at 8.30am following the collision between a Honda motorcycle and a fuel tanker near Burlescombe. A third vehicle was also involved in the collision.

Anthony’s mother paid tribute to him: “My son has always loved life and lived it to the max. He has always been into motorbikes from a very early age and loved to ride his bike at every opportunity.
