Do beards matter? The history of facial hair

Despite reaching ‘peak beard’ last year, their ubiquity shows no sign of abating; facial hair remains the defining look for a generation of modern men.

Now, coinciding with World Beard Day (September 5 2015), a University of Exeter expert will take a look back at beards throughout history, in a major three-year project funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Dr Alun Withey, an expert in medical history, is launching “Do Beards Matter?”, which will study facial hair and its relationship to health and hygiene in Britain between 1700 and 1918, a period of extremes in facial hair trends...

People in Exeter are being given the chance to quiz councillors on any key issues for the city.

Exeter residents are invited to put forward questions to members of the joint County and City Councils' Exeter Board, at their next meeting on 24 September at 5:30pm at the Civic Centre in Paris Street.

The Board allocates 15 minutes for their ‘open forum’, with 3 minutes per speaker, with a maximum of 3 - 4 speakers to allow time for discussion.

Free gym and swim sessions in Teignbridge

Teignbridge leisure centres are encouraging a healthy lifestyle by joining in with National Fitness Day on Wednesday 9 September.

Exeter pledges support for refugees and asylum seekers

Exeter City Council said today (Friday 4 September) that in light of recent events throughout Europe, it was keen to work with the Home Office and other councils throughout the south west to support refugees and people seeking asylum.

Historical data hold secrets of one of UK’s favourite fish

UK fisheries survey logbooks from the 1930s to 1950s have been digitised for the first time, revealing how cod responded to changing temperatures in the last century.
