Council critical of Pay to Stay housing scheme

A government scheme to make social housing tenants pay higher rents if they are earning more, has come under criticism from Exeter City Council.

The City Council has been critical of the Pay to Stay scheme which is due to be introduced from April 2017. The Council believes there should be greater freedom for local authorities to decide on the level of rents and not be dictated from by central government.

Woman arrested over school bomb hoax

Children at a Devon primary school were evacuated this morning (20 November) following a bomb hoax.

Police received a report of a bomb threat at Heathcoat Primary, Broad Lane, Tiverton at around 9.15am.

The school decided as a precaution to evacuate all pupils at the school to a nearby Church, which the police supported.

Following police investigation at around 11.05am officers arrested a 32-year-old local woman in connection with the incident.

Police can confirm that this was a hoax call and at no time was anyone in any danger.

Rugby clubs to benefit from RWC 2015 legacy

Rugby clubs across England and Wales are benefiting from the legacy of Rugby World Cup 2015 through the distribution of equipment used during the Tournament.

Working closely with the RFU and WRU to ensure that as many clubs as possible are benefiting, 392 clubs in England and 45 clubs in Wales were offered equipment that was used at the venues, ranging from tables and chairs to fencing, lockers and bar furniture.

Carpet cleaner pleads guilty to fraud

A trader who travelled the country offering to clean householder’s carpets, including that of a vulnerable dementia sufferer, for rock-bottom prices before hiking his charges by up to 5,400 per cent has plead guilty to seven offences.

On 18th November, 2015 at Exeter Magistrates Court, just before a three day trial was scheduled to start, Mark Dudley of Humber Road, Ferndown, changed his pleas to guilty on four offences under the Fraud Act and three offences under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations.

Researchers devise new diabetes diagnostic tool

Researchers at University of Exeter have developed a new test to help diagnoses diabetes, which they say will lead to more effective diagnosis and patient care.

Research published in the journal Diabetes Care, shows how a genetic test can help doctors to differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes in young adults.

A budding student researcher is among the first from Exeter to secure a prestigious undergraduate placement at the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company.
