Improvement work to start on Ashburton Road in Newton Abbot

Improvements to a pedestrian and cycle route on Ashburton Road in Newton Abbot will get underway next week.

Work on the A383 between Orchard Grove and Oak Park Road will start on Monday (30 July) – initially with two-way traffic lights in place between Laurie Avenue and Oak Park Road after 9.30am.

From Monday 6 August, Laurie Avenue will be made a temporary one-way system for around six weeks. Access will be allowed from Ashburton Road, and exit via Rosemary Avenue.

King Billy pub closure makes way for Exeter city centre redevelopment

Following the submission of fresh plans for student accommodation, development firm Rengen have now successfully completed the purchase of established Exeter city centre pub, the King Billy, and a neighbouring site, off a guide price of £1.5m.

The development, which will see the iconic Longbrook Street pub demolished, was originally planned to house a mix of 124 student bedrooms and commercial units over nine storeys. However, Exeter City Council denied the application proposal, with Rengen forced to submit revised plans.

People are being warned about the dangers of swimming in or jumping into rivers or canals. The warning comes from Exeter City Council as the schools break up for the summer holidays. It follows a spate of incidents where people have been jumping into the Exeter Canal, some at Double Locks. Signs have been put up warning people about the dangers of drowning as well as the disturbance to wildlife. The move has been backed by the Fire Service and the Environment Agency. Hundreds of Scouts descend on Exeter Racecourse for Run To The Fun

Hundreds of scouts are set to take over Exeter Racecourse for a week-long jamboree when Run To The Fun begins this Sunday.

The event is organized by Devon Scouts who have put on a range of activities and adventures ranging from circus skills to axe throwing, with trips to Exeter planned too. Evening entertainment includes a silent disco and a barn dance.
