Donations to local group will be doubled this week as part of national match funding campaign

Topsham based charity, Estuary League of Friends, have launched their appeal to raise £10,000 in a week to provide vital services to support people in need of care, comfort and support in rural communities between Exeter and Exmouth.

The appeal is part of national match funding campaign #SmallCharityWeek . Donations made to Estuary online at BigGive.org between 23–30 June 2025 will be matched £1 for £1. So, a gift of £10 becomes £20, £50 becomes £100, and so on!

All the funds raised will be used to deliver vital services for the community such as:

Drivers warned of overnight closures at Alphington junction

Overnight closures will be needed at the Alphington junction of the A30 next month (September) while essential resurfacing work is carried out.

The roundabout will be partially closed for four nights from Tuesday 4 September to Friday 7 September.

The westbound on and off-slips will be closed from 7pm on Tuesday 4 September, until 6am the following day. The closure will switch to the eastbound on and off-slips on the evenings of Wednesday 5 September and Thursday 6 September. Exeter’s Guildhall Shopping Centre opened its doors to a sweet new resident this morning, with the grand opening of Krispy Kreme’s 122nd UK store. Around 70 eager Krispy Kreme fans were in line, queuing from the early hours of the morning to get their hands on the freshly made treats. A collection of unusual antique fans assembled over many years is to be sold at Chilcott Auctioneers’ next sale.

The fans belonged to Jane Campbell-Allan, originally from Stirlingshire but who lived in Devon for most of her life until her death in 2017.

Jane was known as an eccentric lady with a wicked sense of humour who enjoyed collecting antiques, especially jewellery. But it was fans that caught her imagination. Her interest is believed to have started after an elderly aunt gave her an antique fan when she was young.

New patrol boat for the Exe Estuary

A new patrol boat has been launched in the Exe Estuary to help protect wildlife and ensure water users stay safe.

The 5.75-metre-long patrol boat has been funded by the South East Devon Habitat Regulations Executive Committee (SEDHREC) -- a partnership of Teignbridge, Exeter and East Devon Councils set up to help protect internationally important conservation sites on the Exe Estuary, Dawlish Warren and East Devon's Pebblebed Heaths. Recent heatwave reveals historic farm

This summer’s hot, dry weather has revealed cropmarks in a field in Bicton that show a Romano-British farmstead once stood there.

Aerial photography of the farmstead, originally discovered by former Devon County Archaeologist Frances Griffith in 1984, has been released by Historic England. The cropmarks suggest the field in Bicton may have contained farm buildings surrounded by fields and paddocks.
