Leading South West building services engineering company EX2 Group has welcomed three new apprentices this week, as they begin their professional training in Electrical Installation with Exeter College.

Christian, Alfie, and Harvey were welcomed to the Exeter offices by James Rayner (right), Project Manager. The apprentices will combine on-site experience with classroom learning as they work towards their Level 3 Electrical Installation qualifications. Humanimal Trust, a charity founded by orthopaedic-neuro veterinary surgeon, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick - otherwise known as The Supervet - is calling on people across Devon to join its mission to close the divide between human and animal medicine.

The pandemic has served as a stark reminder of just how closely all species are connected. Add to this the growing urgency of several interlinked health challenges that affect both humans and animals such as antibiotic resistance, and the need to work together to tackle these global challenges becomes even more pressing.

A year in the planning, the Connaught@Christmas illuminated trail is finally ablaze with a delightful atmosphere created by thousands of colourful LED lights.

Although the first night was cancelled due to extreme high winds from Storm Barra, the lighting, structures and marquee escaped the ravages of the storm, allowing the event to go ahead on the second night. Ticket holders were refunded and most immediately rebooked for another day.

People in Exwick could be getting an award-winning chippie.

Exmouth-based Krispies wants to expand and has its eye on a former betting shop in the suburb of Exeter.

Husband and wife Kelly and Tim Barnes started their business in the seaside town more than 20 years ago and now have two stores: in Exeter Road and Pines Road.

Their culinary skill with the nation’s traditional dish has achieved critical acclaim, including being crowned the UK’s Fish and Chip Shop of the Year in 2019.

A special Christmas memorial service will be held at Exeter and Devon Crematorium and Cemetery on Topsham Road to commemorate loved ones who have passed away in the community in 2021.

First region-wide corporate esports festival comes to the South West

The first corporate esports festival for the whole of the South West is taking place in Exeter next year, organised by Tech South West in partnership with Exeter College.

Esports is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, with a global revenue of over $1bn and an audience of 474m in 2021, according to Newzoo. Esports first appeared as an official medal sport at the Asian Indoor Games in Macau in 2007, with the International Olympic Committee suggesting in 2017 that they may be included in future Olympic tournaments.

Double digit spending increase for vulnerable children and adults in Devon

Spending on services for vulnerable children and adults in Devon are set to rise by more than 10 per cent next year.

Devon County Council's target budget for 2022/23 was approved by the Cabinet today (Wednesday 8 December) but will not be finalised until February.

The target budget calls for an extra £18.2 million to be spent on adult care and health in the new financial year. That's an increase of 10.5 per cent.

There will be an increase of £11.6 million for children's services if the budget is ratified. That's a rise of 10.8 per cent.

Over 2.2 million doses given as Covid-19 vaccination programme reaches anniversary milestone

In just one year more than 2.2 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been given across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay at 43 vaccine clinic sites and over 160 outreach clinics. Over the last year people have been vaccinated in sports grounds, pharmacies, pubs, hospitals, leisure centres and places of worship.

The Devon stage of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain 2021 attracted the biggest crowd of this year’s race, according to a new independent report.

The report commissioned by the Tour has revealed that around 200,000 spectators watched Stage Two along the 115-mile route from Sherford to Exeter – bringing more than £4.2 million into the local economy.
