Leading South West building services engineering company EX2 Group has welcomed three new apprentices this week, as they begin their professional training in Electrical Installation with Exeter College.

Christian, Alfie, and Harvey were welcomed to the Exeter offices by James Rayner (right), Project Manager. The apprentices will combine on-site experience with classroom learning as they work towards their Level 3 Electrical Installation qualifications. Exeter care home residents enjoy a virtual afternoon of festive fun

Barchester’s Cumberland Grange care home, in Exeter got into the Christmas spirit by joining a virtual afternoon of festivities along with the staff and residents at over seventy Barchester care homes across the south of England, Jersey and the Isle of Wight.

Exeter City Council’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) has announced a major new exhibition exploring the museum and Devon’s links with the Transatlantic Slave Trade in early 2022.

In Plain Sight: Transatlantic slavery and Devon will investigate aspects of Devon and Exeter’s relationship with the Transatlantic Slave Trade that are all around us, but for some remain ‘hidden in plain sight’. Using RAMM’s collections and the expertise of many contributors, it aims to shed light on this hidden history.

Multi-million pound investment for adult social care

Millions of pounds are being pumped in to support adult social care providers in Devon this winter, to help ease the pressure on hospitals, and help them recruit and retain valuable care staff.

Following Devon County Council's announcement this month of £3 million for domiciliary care staff, the Council today has announced a further £5.3 million to help support independent sector residential and nursing care workers.

The funding comes from the government, and NHS Devon has also contributed to the one-off funding package.

Generous Tesco shoppers in Devon have been thanked after helping to donate more than 1.5million meals’ worth of food to help charities feed people during Christmas and the winter months.

During the twice-yearly Tesco Food Collection, which ran in Tesco stores from 18-20 November, customers were asked to donate long-life food to support FareShare and the Trussell Trust.

Taylor Wimpey continues its support for community parkrun in Cranbrook

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the local community, Taylor Wimpey Exeter has donated a further £750 towards parkrun events at Cranbrook Country Park.

150 cats from the South West have found their forever homes in the past year, thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Cats Protection’s centres in Cornwall, Exeter and Ferndown helped dozens of locals find a new feline friend in 2021.

One such cat was Scarab, who was originally adopted from the Cornwall Adoption Centre in 2020 but went missing shortly after.

Chilcotts Auctioneers final sale of 2021 was a roaring success, not least a collection of antique silver spoons that had garnered huge amounts of interest.

‘The Charles C Brian Collection’ included many excellent examples of rare early West Country spoons, some dating back to the late 16th century.

In total, 53 lots of spoons were sold together with several additional items of Exeter. The initial estimate of £20,000 to £30,000 was quickly exceeded, with the final hammer total reaching an impressive £43,000.

One of the UK’s rarest fungi found at The Donkey Sanctuary

One of the UK’s rarest fungi, which looks like an underwater coral, has been unexpectedly found in woodland belonging to international animal welfare charity, The Donkey Sanctuary.

The violet coral, Clavaria zollingeri, was recently discovered by one of the charity’s conservation officers, Helen Cavilla, at Paccombe Farm which is home to more than 350 donkeys.

The sighting is only the second time this fungus has been recorded in Devon, whilst other records are from just a handful of sites across the UK.
