Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

Jewellery stolen in Devon burglary

Police in Newton Abbot are appealing for information following a burglary in Kingskerswell where a sentimental watch was stolen.

The burglary occurred sometime between Thursday 2nd April and Saturday 4th April at a property in Park Road, Kingskerswell.

Entry was gained by smashing a conservatory window, and once inside and following a search a number of jewellery items were stolen including rings and watches.

Amongst the items stolen was a rose gold pocket watch, (similar pictured) which had a ‘T’ bar chain attached to it.

Volunteers wanted for Neon Night Run

A total of 1,351 people are taking part in the South West’s first neon night run, being held in Exeter this weekend.

The sponsored event has proved so popular that organisers at Hospiscare are looking for more volunteers to help from early evening on Sat May 30 in the event arena.

The 5k run starts from the University of Exeter where there is a Neon Wonderland.

A blind veteran from Exeter will celebrate Blind Veterans UK’s 100 year anniversary at a special garden party at Buckingham Palace on 4 June.

John Evans, 60, will be visiting the palace with more than 1,000 other veterans helped by Blind Veterans UK, to mark the military charity’s 100 years of proud service and support to blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

He served in the Royal Air Force from 1972 until 1978, working as an Engineer at RAF Bicester and RAF Abingdon.

Pond snails have faults too!

Animals, like humans, excel at some tasks but not others according to a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Aberystwyth used pond snails to investigate learning and memory. They found that if an individual is good at forming memories about food they are poor at forming memories related to predator threat and vice versa.

Polar bear parade for harbour

Living Coasts is highlighting the issue of climate change with a parade of petite painted polar bears.

Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium is running the free trail between 25th May and 31st August. Businesses around Torquay harbour will have the mini polar bears on display throughout the summer.

The Annual General Meeting of the Exeter & District Caledonian Society took place on Friday 22 May at Southernhay URC Hall in Exeter.

Over thirty members attended and current Vice President Greenock born Hilda Sterry has been elected to serve a two year term as President.

Exmouth to attract world class kite racers

Top sailing figures are flocking to Exmouth this June to participate in the annual kitesurfing competition organised by Edge Watersports. The Edge Race Cup, due to take place on 6th and 7th June, has become the biggest national kitesurfing competition and is attracting worldwide interest as the warm-up event for the International Sailing Federation World Cup (ISAF) in Weymouth just days later.
