CASA officially opens in Topsham

A ribbon cutting ceremony was carried out by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Olwen Foggin, to officially open CASA, a new independent furnishings and giftware store in Topsham.

Queenstreet Carpets & Furnishings, a family-owned company trading in Exeter for nearly half a century, hosted the summer launch event to celebrate the opening of their second new store inviting customers, suppliers and local businesses.

Appeal after child hit by car in Crediton

Police are appealing for witnesses after a child was seriously injured following a collision with a car in Crediton at the weekend.

The collision involving the boy, who was a pedestrian, and a blue Volkswagen Polo, happened at around 4.25pm on Saturday 13 June, on or close to the pedestrian crossing on East Street, near the junction with Church Street.

The boy was taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, with serious leg injuries and minor head injuries.

Debra Myhill, Professor of Education at the University of Exeter has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for her leadership of the Secondary PGCE programme and the Centre for Research in Writing.

Special approach to rural crime

Devon and Cornwall police are taking a special approach to combating rural crime.

On Saturday 6 June, special constables carried out an operation around Axminster. Operation Betony which was led by Special Sergeant Piers Layburn and was carried out by a total of nine Special Constables and one Police Constable.

Op Betony involves running stock-checks on all vehicles throughout the evening and undertaking searches if necessary.

Man dies following Axminster crash

Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision in Axminster on Friday 12 June in which a man died.

At 2.30pm Dorset Ambulance Control informed police of a collision involving a car and lorry on the A35 at Raymond’s Hill on the Dorset-bound carriageway, close to the Devon and Dorset border.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police attended, along with highways, fire and ambulance crews.

The 78-year-old male driver of the blue Volkswagen Polo, from Poole, Dorset, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

Clampdown on illegal fishing continues

Environment Agency enforcement teams continued their clampdown on illegal fishing, issuing 90 offence notices for close season offences across England from the start of close season (15 March) to the end of May. Patrols focused on a range of illegal fishing – including close season offences and fishing without a valid rod licence.

‘Close season’ – which runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive – is when coarse angling is suspended on rivers, streams and specified canals and stillwaters to protect spawning fish.

Exeter Family Friendly raise £2.5k

A team of executives from Exeter Family Friendly raised £2675 for Devon-based charity Rainbow Living after cycling 72 miles from Wellington to Salcombe.

Starting at 8:30am, Exeter Family’s Andy Chapman (CEO), Simon Philp, Paul Austin, Alan Ord and Adrian Hodgkinson crossed the finish line at 16:30pm, to raise money for the protection provider’s charity of the year.

New cycle shelter for RD&E staff

Staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital are now benefiting from improved cycling facilities to encourage them to get on their bikes and enjoy a greener and cheaper commute to work.

The hospital has just unveiled a new state of the art cycle shelter in the grounds of its Wonford site, just outside Bowmoor House. Traditional hiring methods still favoured

Whilst nearly two in five (39%) companies plan to ramp up hiring in the second half of 2015, new research from Robert Half UK reveals that HR directors still favour traditional methods of recruitment, such as job postings or enlisting a recruitment consultancy, over referrals and word of mouth to secure the strongest candidates.
