Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

Mystery hole appears on Exmouth beach

A large mystery hole has appeared on Exmouth beach, forcing a section to be closed off.

The hole, which appeared at the eastern end of the beach, near Orcombe Point, was discovered at lunchtime yesterday (2 July) by a member of the public.

The National Maritime Operations Centre sent Exmouth Coastguard to secure the area.

On arrival the Coastguard team found a hole measuring approximately 15ft x 15ft filled with water. The surrounding sand was also soft and fresh holes were appearing nearby.

Cranbrook’s Younghayes Centre will soon be generating its own electricity and creating a pot of money to help the growing community after E.ON paid for solar PV panels to be installed.

Voluntary group Community Helpers in Cranbrook (CHIC) approached energy company E.ON and East Devon District Council and proposed utilising the roof space on the Younghayes centre to generate renewable energy and both organisations were keen to help make the idea a reality.

CEO appointed for Exeter BID

Exeter Business Improvement District (Exeter BID) is pleased to announce the appointment of the company’s first chief executive officer.

Craig Bulley, former Town Centre Manager of Barnstaple will take up the post from Monday 27th July.

Minute's silence for Tunisia dead

A national silence of one minute will be held today at 12pm in a mark of respect who lost their lives in the Tunisia beach attack.

The bodies of 17 of the 30 British victims have been returned to the UK and more are expected to be repatriated on today and tomorrow.

Fire Service praises Exeter student

On the night of 13 January 2015, at 20:22 a serious fire developed in the second floor kitchen of Duryard Halls of Residence, Exeter University.

The fire originated in a microwave cooker and rapidly spread to the kitchen units. Soon the entire kitchen was fully enveloped, producing a significant volume of poisonous acrid smoke posing a very immediate and serious danger to life within the halls of residence.

As part of TOPOS, an ongoing project by award-winning Exeter-based artist Volkhardt Müller to make and showcase a series of brand new works in response to the city and its populace, the TS Eliot-nominated poet Sean Borodale is artist-in-residence for a period of five days.

From 30 June to 4 July, Sean and Volkhardt will enter into a dialogue to produce a series of pamphlets in response to the city. The work will involve the staging of theatrical moments in the TOPOS space and it will be periodically open to the public – with the option to spectate or to participate.

Time is running out for local people to tell the independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England what they think of proposals for new county division boundaries across Devon.

The public consultation closes on 6 July 2015.

The Commission’s draft recommendations propose that Devon County Council should have 60 county councillors in the future, two fewer than the current arrangements.
