Putting people first in Exeter and Devon – time to have your say

Engagement is underway on the city council’s proposals for the future reorganisation of local government in Devon.

Councillors backed proposals for the geography for a potential new unitary authority which includes the city of Exeter and surrounding areas at an Extraordinary Council meeting.

The city council is proposing:

  • An urban unitary council for Exeter and the surrounding areas
  • An urban unitary council for Plymouth and adjacent Parishes
  • A rural and coastal unitary council for the remainder of Devon

The gorilla with wanderlust is back on home soil - for a time. PEG - Polar Explorer Gorilla - left Living Coasts in Torquay with HMS PROTECTOR, the Royal Navy's Ice Patrol Vessel, for her last deployment in October 2013.

She has since travelled to a range of South, North and Central American countries, along with the Caribbean, British Virgin Islands, South Africa, South Georgia and finally Antarctica, where the crew conducted surveying work and supported the British Antarctic Survey during the austral summer.

Warning of work on Bridge Road in Exeter

Essential work is to be carried out to the canal bridges on Bridge Road in Exeter.

On Monday 10 August and Tuesday 11 August, inspections and maintenance work will be undertaken on the swing bridge. Contraflow arrangements will be in place, with all traffic using the bascule bridge.

From Wednesday 12 August to Monday 17 August, the contraflow will run on the swing bridge, as the timber joint between the bascule bridge and the road will be replaced and upgraded with a reinforced concrete and stainless steel structure.

Police appeal after Cowick Street incident

Devon and Cornwall Police are continuing to investigate a serious incident that occurred in Exeter in the early hours of Saturday morning. The incident occurred at the junction of Cowick Street and Old Vicarage Road, St Thomas Exeter. One male remains in a critical condition at Derriford hospital. Roads within the area were closed for a period of time to allow specialist investigators to deal with the incident and we are grateful for patience shown by the local community. Flood warning as heavy rain set to hit Devon

The Met Office is warning that areas of heavy rain are likely affect parts of Devon this morning (Monday).

Forecasters say the rain should start clearing by early afternoon, but are warning to be aware of the possibility of localised surface water flooding, as well as minor disruption to road travel and outdoor activities.

The Exeter-based agency’s Chief Forecaster said: A zone of moist, warm air covers the UK at present, and as developments in the Atlantic move northeast, some heavy rain is likely to develop.

For the Okehampton & District Agricultural Association work is well underway and plans are in place for the 108th Okehampton Show on Thursday 13th August at Stoney Park Showground, just outside Okehampton.

This traditional countryside event, where animals take pride of place, is a very popular day out in a beautiful setting on the northern edge of the Dartmoor National Park and is a great opportunity to meet with friends from far and wide. Dozens of firefighters tackle barn blaze

Dozens of firefighters were called to tackle a large barn fire involving 4,000 litres of diesel near Exeter in the early hours of today (Sunday 9 August).

Fire engines from Middlemoor, Danes Castle and Topsham were sent to the blaze at New House Farm in Clyst Honiton at around 1am.

On arrival crews requested a fourth appliance. The water bowser from Danes Castle and the incident command unit from Honiton were also sent, and the fourth appliance came from Ottery St Mary.

A pioneering student entrepreneur support programme has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The IGNITE scheme, which supports budding student entrepreneurs to gain experience and develop their ideas, has been nominated for The Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship in the 2015 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards.
