Engagement is underway on the city council’s proposals for the future reorganisation of local government in Devon.

Councillors backed proposals for the geography for a potential new unitary authority which includes the city of Exeter and surrounding areas at an Extraordinary Council meeting.

The city council is proposing:

  • An urban unitary council for Exeter and the surrounding areas
  • An urban unitary council for Plymouth and adjacent Parishes
  • A rural and coastal unitary council for the remainder of Devon

'Thinking Drinkers' Tom Sandham and Ben McFarland are visiting Exeter’s pubs on a gruelling 1,000-mile plus, two-week journey on a tandem bike to toast the great British pub and highlight the industry’s crisis.

The pair are cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats and showcasing how wonderful and versatile pubs can be by ONLY eating, drinking, sleeping and stopping in British boozers, including Mill On The Exe and Thorveton Arms in Exeter.

To mark Learning Disability Week this week (16-22 June), Devon County Council is highlighting the work of its Reaching For Independence (RFI) service, which supports people with social care needs to develop life skills and promote independence.

Iron Bridge in Exeter re-opened

The Grade II Listed Iron Bridge in Exeter has re-opened on schedule today (Monday 16 June) following major refurbishment.

Extensive work has been carried out in order to prevent water damage to the structure, which was built in 1834.

Over the past five months, the old road surface has been removed and a new waterproof layer has been added. Drainage has been improved, and signs and lighting have been upgraded. Some areas of the bridge have also been painted where immediate attention was needed, but a more comprehensive scheme of paint work will be undertaken in future....

Devon residents are being urged to sign up to a new UK-wide health and care research registry, as part of the nation’s biggest-ever recruitment drive for clinical trials.

An Exeter club has made history as it hosted its first junior wheelchair basketball event in Devon, welcoming young players from across the region to take part in an inclusive day of sport.
