Devon hosts first-ever junior wheelchair basketball event

An Exeter club has made history as it hosted its first junior wheelchair basketball event in Devon, welcoming young players from across the region to take part in an inclusive day of sport.

The event, hosted by the Exeter Otters at Wonford Leisure Centre, formed part of the national Inspire a Generation U14 pilot and brought together players aged 7–14 from across Cardiff, Swansea, and Bath.

On the day, young wheelchair users developed their basketball skills, built confidence, and connected with others who share their passion.

Sponsored by RGK, a manufacturer of sports wheelchairs, the basketball event marked an exciting step forward in the development of a future U14 national wheelchair basketball league.

Jack Davey, Chairman of the Exeter Otters and Mobility Advisor at RGK, said: “This is about more than just sport. As a wheelchair basketballer myself, I know just how important building a community and a space where people of all abilities can thrive.

“Having the right equipment is essential for athletes of all ages to reach their full potential in sports. We wanted to create an opportunity for juniors to experience the joy and excitement of wheelchair basketball, and the response has been incredible. This event is the first of its kind in Exeter, and it's just the beginning."

The Exeter Otters, alongside national partners, including RGK, are now looking ahead to growing wheelchair basketball participation and ensuring the region has a strong foundation for an ongoing junior league.
