Rare bird comes to RAMM

An unusual North American joins the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery’s collections.

Underweight but with no sign of predation, a sora rail (Porzana carolina) was found on RSPB’s Exminster Marsh on a cold morning in October 2016. The little bird was dead: a sad end for the second recorded sora rail to visit Devon. It is 20th recorded sighting for the UK.

RAMM welcomes millionth visitor

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) welcomed its millionth visitor since its redevelopment last Friday 26 June.

Polly Hill, a student at Exeter College was treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour with Tony Eccles, the museum’s Curator of Ethnography who gave a special insight into some of the museum’s objects from the four corners of the world.

An exploration of the history, manufacture and social significance of African printed and factory-woven textiles. The designs mirror the convergence of African tastes and patronage with strong historical and contemporary trading ties from across the globe. This promises to be a special one: Indie folk band Stornoway will play. It's part a nationwide tour to celebrate the release of their eagerly anticipated third album. Quarter ton sea shell returned to Hartlepool

What a difference 100 years can make. A massive explosive shell that contributed to death and destruction in 1914 Hartlepool has returned in a piano removal van and welcomed with a civic reception.

The shell is one of the 1,150 that were fired by German battle cruisers during the bombardment of Hartlepool on 16 December 1914. It failed to explode and was sent to Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum for display. The shell has been returned to Hartlepool to be the centerpiece of the displays during their centenary commemorations.
