Tips on how to stay hydrated in the one of the UK’s longest heatwaves
With the consistently hot weather showing no sign of letting up, and the Met Office issuing an amber “heat health watch warning” urging people to either stay out, or avoid the sun - keeping properly hydrated should be at the top of everyone’s priority list. However, new research by Actiph Water reveals an overwhelming nine out ten (90%) Brits aren’t getting the recommended amount of water a day.
More so, only 19% actually know they should be drinking between 1.4 – 1.8 litres of water a day, and one in...
People are being warned about the dangers of swimming in or jumping into rivers or canals.
The warning comes from Exeter City Council as the hot weather continues.
It follows a spate of incidents where people have been jumping into the Exeter Canal, some at Double Locks.
Signs have been put up warning people about the dangers of drowning as well as the disturbance to wildlife. The move has been backed by the Fire Service and the Environment Agency.
Cllr David Harvey, Lead Councillor for Place, said the Council was concerned for the safety of people jumping...
Brogan Coates, a second year marine biology student studying at the University of Exeter, is to join a team of women kayaking the length of Wales collecting plastic as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the damage that single-use plastics cause to our oceans every year.
The campaign, which first happened last year, is organised by ‘Love Her Wild’ an organisation designed to empower women into exploring the world around them.
The whole distance of 241km, from Ellesmere Port to Sharpness, is to be kayaked by a 17-woman team, with Brogan taking part in the last of the...
More than 200 schools are closed across Devon today and an amber weather warning in place as snow blanketed much of the county.
Heavier wintry showers and strong winds are forecast later this afternoon posing even more tricky conditions for drivers.
The Met Office has issued RED warning for the county with the risk of up to 20cm of snow countywide, with the possibility of 50cm on high ground of Dartmoor and Exmoor.
Snowfall is expected to spread north throughout the course of the day. Conditions could become more disruptive to travel as the day progresses.
People are invited to have their say on proposals to update the Exe Estuary’s Codes of Conduct.
The codes, which have been in place for many years, ensure that users are able to enjoy the area in safety while wildlife is protected.
Many enjoy a range of varied activities on and around the Exe Estuary including walking, kayaking, kite-surfing, sailing and powerboating.
Codes of Conduct are particularly useful on the Estuary where different activities overlap, with many participants not linked to a particular club or are from outside the area.
Community minded businesses, such as cafes and shops, are being encouraged to join a growing movement to help the environment.
The concept is simple. Reduce the number of plastic bottles being thrown away by inviting people to re-fill their water bottles with tap water for free. It’s a win-win; good for the environment; good for people’s health, to hydrate with water rather than sugary drinks; and good PR for the businesses and charities that open their doors to thirsty passers-by. What began as a local campaign in Bude, Refill now has attracted national appeal with a diverse range...

South West Water is launching a new campaign encouraging customers to dispose of cooking fat, oil and grease in the kitchen bin.
Every year, tens of thousands of litres of waste fat, cooking oil and grease are poured down sinks by people who don’t realise the problems this could cause.
South West Water’s Head of Community Relations, Alan Hyde, explained: “When hot fat, oil and grease cools it forms a solid mass which can build up inside your pipes.
“At best you might notice that your sink or dishwasher isn’t draining as quickly, but blocked pipes can also cause...
