Bumper day of fun at farm open day

AS if running a busy beef and arable farm, as well as one of Exeter’s only butcher’s shops, wasn’t enough, local farmers Neil and Sally Grigg are soon to be opening their gates to the public, as part of the national Open Farm Sunday scheme.

The Griggs, who run Burrow Farm in Broadclyst, near Exeter, have taken part in Open Farm Sunday before, and say that in the past it proved to be a great way to give people a fun, free day out in a location that wouldn’t normally be accessible to them.

‘So many drive past our farm gates and see our cows grazing in the fields, but...

Summer Sunday trains to and from Okehampton will return later this month.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) service, funded by Devon County Council, will run four trains each way between Okehampton and Exeter every Sunday, from Sunday 20 May to Sunday 9 September.

The service, which launched in 1997, is part of the ongoing efforts to re-introduce regular services on the line.

The Summer Sunday train announcement follows the recent second successful special trip of the “Royal Oke”, organised by OkeRail in partnership with GWR, to highlight the demand for regular...

Rail services on the Okehampton Sunday Dartmoor Service will continue to operate with a revised schedule until further notice.

Track speed restrictions remain in place between Coleford Junction and Okehampton, which requires the amended timetable.

The Summer Sunday Services, run by Great Western Railway (GWR) and funded by Devon County Council, will also continue to start and terminate at Exeter St Davids rather than Exeter Central.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Development and Waste, said: “Partners delivering the...

More Sunday trains to run between Exeter and Exmouth

Great Western Railway (GWR) will run extra trains on Sundays between Exeter Central and Exmouth from 15 May.

Trains will run every half hour through most of the day on Sundays throughout the year, instead of the previous hourly service; with a number extending to Exeter St Davids. All trains will call at Digby & Sowton, Newcourt, Topsham and Lympstone Village stations.

Morning trains to Exmouth and afternoon trains back will also call at Polsloe Bridge, providing more opportunities for a seaside day trip to Exmouth.

The improved Sunday service is an important...

Judi Spiers and Michael Caines cause a stir

Local popular broadcaster Judi Spiers was on hand to help Michael Caines, MBE, to Stir Up some Christmas puddings for local adoption charity Families for Children.

Stir up Sunday is traditionally the day for everyone in the family to take a turn at stirring the Christmas pudding, whilst making a wish.

Last Sunday at Darts Farms Michael and Judi helped adopted children from across the region do just that and create their own Christmas puddings.

Michael, who was adopted into an Exeter family, credits Families for Children with making him the person he is today and...

Free off-street parking in Teignbridge

Free Sunday car parking has been re-introduced in Teignmouth, Shaldon, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren car parks for the winter months.

From Sunday November 1 the seaside communities have rejoined the successful scheme which sees all 35 of Teignbridge District Council-owned car parks free of any charges on a Sunday.

The Council's free parking scheme, introduced in 2011, is aimed at boosting local trade and cutting costs to motorists. Charges are dropped in all urban and rural parts of the district with the exception of Teignmouth, Shaldon, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren through the...

Exeter Sunday Market and Car Boot Sale to close temporarily

Stagecoach have unexpectedly brought forward the start date for work on the new bus depot at Matford, meaning a temporary closure of the weekly Sunday market and car boot sale at the Exeter Livestock Centre.

This week's market (Sunday 2 November) will be the last until the new year, with the market re-opening on Sunday 3 January.

It had been expected that the works on the depot would start in February and the market would have been able to operate alongside it. However the Livestock Centre is currently undergoing major works to replace its roof and install solar panels, two...

Sounds of the summer at Knightshayes

Knightshayes is hosting its third annual celebration of local food and music in the parkland on every Sunday during August. These are free events for the whole family.

Soupstock was started in 2013 as a way to help new audiences discover Knightshayes. The aim was to put together an event to complement the local food served in the café, much of which is sourced from Knightshayes’ kitchen garden. The rolling Devon hills and the gothic stables block form the backdrop to this popular event.

Last year’s line-up included some great music from local bands followed by some top...
