National Trust garden teams have conducted their annual flower count for Valentine’s Day and although this year spring seems to be on the way, just as we would normally expect, but what is noticeable is how many scented plants are out in flower at this early time of year. National Trust gardeners reported 1,737 plants blooming in this year’s 12th annual Valentine’s Flower count, 34% down on last year’s figure of 2,644. Night-time light pollution causes spring to come early

Human use of artificial light is causing Spring to come at least a week early in the UK, researchers at the University of Exeter in Cornwall have found.

New research led by a team of biologists based at the University’s Penryn campus highlights for the first time and at a national scale the relationship between the amount of artificial night-time light and the date of budburst in woodland trees.

Visitors to Exeter Cathedral have a special opportunity to meet the artist behind the current ‘Via Crucis’ exhibition, which has been on display since early February.

Caroline Waterlow will be in Exeter to talk about her work and its inspiration at 1pm on Wednesday 9th March for the latest of the Cathedral’s Lunchtime Bite events. The Castle Drogo Youth Panel has planned a free community open evening to celebrate Museums at Night on Friday 15 May. From 6pm until 9pm, the gates will be flung open for all local people to come up and enjoy spending time at the castle outside normal opening hours. Weather warning of strong wind for Devon

Strong winds are set to batter Devon tomorrow (Tuesday 5 May), with gusts of up to 50mph forecast.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Southwesterly winds will gust to over 50 mph at times in parts of southern England and south Wales, and to 60 mph in some exposed coastal sites.

"The public are advised that these gusts may cause minor damage to trees, and make travel tricky for the likes of towing vehicles."

The warning is valid from 9am until 7pm tomorrow.
