In this installation, Phil Root references history and memory, producing artworks through a process of intuitive layering and erasure of both physical and historical attributes.

Upon entering the galleries, the viewer is confronted with a number of large plywood boards that act as display structures on which the artist composes arrangements of images, drawings, and objects. In this solo exhibition at Spacex, Scott King presents a body of recent work that deals almost exclusively with notions of public art and its role within urban regeneration.

Interdisciplinary symposium

A symposium, entitled 'Art of the Edgelands', will take place at the University of Exeter on Saturday 26th April.

Speakers will consider the significance of ‘edgelands’ and other marginal spaces, neither urban nor rural, as sites for artistic inquiry, and as cultural spaces.

A light lunch is also available if pre-booked via Eventbrite for £4.89.

The symposium, which will take place between the hours of 10am-4pm, is a free event, although booking is essential.

Soft Estate: Edward Chell

The exhibition ‘Soft Estate’, the title of which derives from the Highways Agency term used to describe the natural habitats that have evolved along motorways and trunk roads, looks at how green borders offer a refuge for wildlife and a modern form of wilderness in the midst of intense urbanisation and agrochemical farming.

Artist and academic Edward Chell investigates these contemporary motorway landscapes, linking them to 18th century ideas of the picturesque to explore the interface between history, ecology, roads and travel through a series of new works.

Two Saturday Art Club sessions still to come at Spacex

For the past few weeks Saturday mornings at Spacex have been busy as Art Club children try out activities that link to their current exhibition. Children have made words with food, created wild, large-scale drawings and doodled imaginary creatures. Spacex was also helping to keep kids entertained this half term at their Big Draw event on 30th October.

If you think this sounds like fun, then there are still two Art Club sessions left on 10th and 17th November.

11am–1pm, ages 6–11, children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

Layla Curtis Exhibition

British artist Layla Curtis presents a solo exhibition of work at Spacex in central Exeter, including a new commission entitled Antipodes (working title), 2013 and Tong Tana, 2012. Curtis’s work has a focus on mapping and the ways we represent terrain and locate ourselves and our movements through space.

Layla Curtis received her BA Fine Art from Edinburgh College of Art (1998) and her MA Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art (2000). Her work, featuring in collections including the Tate Collection, and the Government Art Collection, is exhibited widely.
