Balfour Beatty team prepares to Open Doors at Exeter Library

Exeter Central Library, which is being refurbished by Mansell, a Balfour Beatty brand, will be opening its doors to the public on 27 and 28 September for the UK Contractors Group Open Doors Weekend. Open Doors Weekend aims to promote the diverse world of modern construction by giving the public access to selected construction sites around the UK. St Petrock's shortlisted for Guardian Charity Awards

The Guardian Charity Awards 2013 shortlist, announced today, has St Petrock’s, Exeter’s charity for people who are homeless, among its list of successful charities. Five of these charities will find out in October whether they will share the £25,000 prize money and other prizes.

50+ Show success leads to new West Country edition

The rapidly-growing 50+ Show, which is already held each year in London, Manchester and Glasgow and will be held for the first time in Birmingham this 2013, is about to take place for the first time in Exeter in 2014. The 50+ Show is the largest exhibition in the UK specifically for the active over 50s.

The popularity of the 50+ Show around the country led to calls for it to take place in the West Country, and the organisers have now announced that the 50+ Show will launch at the popular Westpoint arena outside Exeter, on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September 2014.

Medical School welcomes first Medicine students

The first intake of Medicine students have embarked on the path to becoming a doctor at the University of Exeter Medical School.

The class of 2013 is made up of 130 students have enrolled for the five year degree which will see them working in NHS Trusts across the South West.

Allergy Conference aims to improve diagnosis and treatment

Across the globe, cases of allergy are significantly increasing. An estimated 21 million people in the UK now suffer from an allergy, with at least one in three people affected at some time in their lives. In Devon and Cornwall, that equates to around 600,000 people.

Unemployment rate in the South West unchanged as UK sees an overall 0.1% fall

The South West continues to see one of the UK's highest rates of employment, despite a slight fall in employment of 0.7% to 73.9% in the period from May to July. The rate of unemployment for the region remained unchanged at 6.2%.

The Office for National Statistics has released both national and regional figures for the last financial quarter.

The overall UK unemployment rate dropped by 0.1% from the previous quarter, from 7.8% to 7.7%, though a number of variations can be seen around the country, with some areas experiencing rising unemployment.
