A music and arts festival is being held to raise money for Devon’s first permanent recovery café. The RISE 'n' Shine Festival will take place on Friday 27th November from 6pm at Sidwells Street Methodist Church in Exeter. Proceeds will go towards setting up the county’s first permanent community café for people recovering from a drug or alcohol issue. The project is being organised by RISE Recovery, which provides drug and alcohol services across Devon. New Children's Hospice South West shop opens in Exeter

Founder and CEO of Children’s Hospice South West, Eddie Farwell, opened the charity’s new shop in Exeter today (Thursday 1 October).

The new shop is situated on the busy Sidwell Street and shoppers were queuing to get inside on its opening day.

The new shop has a fresh modern layout with a great range of goods on offer including a dedicated children’s section, and is the result of the relocation of the charity’s existing shop in Fore Street.

Police appeal for witnesses after assault

Police in Exeter are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a man was assaulted in Exeter at the weekend.

A 33-year-old local man was walking home with his wife along Sidwell Street when he became involved in a verbal altercation with a woman and two men outside the Odeon cinema.

One member of the group punched the victim to the face causing him to fall to the floor.

He suffered a minor facial injury as a result of the incident, which happened on Sunday 23 November between 12.20am and 12.30am.

The Glories of Venice – in Exeter!

On Saturday 4 October at 7.30pm a concert of glorious music for choir and brass is to take place in the Methodist Church in Sidwell Street.

The music to be performed is by Venetian composers from the 16th– 17th centuries, including Gabrieli, Schutz and Monteverdi.

In true Venetian fashion, the different ‘choirs’ of brass instruments and voices will be positioned at various points in the church, making the most of the wonderful gallery and staircases and the fantastic acoustic.

Indeed the church will become Exeter’s equivalent to St. Mark’s Basilica, Venice!

Sexual health team targets over 40s in Exeter

MEN and women aged over 40 are the target of a sexual health campaign launched by an NHS clinic in Exeter. The Centre, managed by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, is aiming to raise awareness among over-40s of the sexual health and contraceptive services it provides.

The move comes ahead of Sexual Health Week 2014, which runs from 15 to 21 September. Data from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows that the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continues to rise among those aged 45 to 64, while HIV diagnoses have doubled in the over-50s over the past decade....

New opening hours for Sidwell Street walk-in centre

The opening hours of the NHS walk-in centre in Sidwell Street, Exeter, have been temporarily reduced as of yesterday.

The opening hours will now be 8am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

The NHS Trust has been forced to reduce the opening hours due to staffing issues, including long-term sickness and difficulties in recruiting suitably qualified staff.

The change in opening hours has been supported by the Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group.

New interactive information points installed in Exeter city centre

Up to date information is now available to visitors in Exeter City Centre via two interactive “monoliths”. These new information points, which have been installed at Bedford Square in Princesshay, outside Costa Coffee, and on Sidwell Street, outside John Lewis, are similar in appearance to the existing red monoliths located around the city, except they have the added functionality of a digital screen display.

ITea and Biscuits Week takes place this week (16-22 September). A popular annual event, it aims to encourage older people who don't currently use computers, the internet, tablets and smartphones to discover the benefits this technology offers.
