The Donkey Sanctuary staff hand-rear foal after he’s rejected by his mother

Staff at the international animal welfare charity, The Donkey Sanctuary, have taken on the task of hand-rearing a new born foal after it was rejected by its mother, who herself had been rescued by the charity.

Leyla Anstee, farm manager, The Donkey Sanctuary’s Brookfield Farm, says: “The mare and foal were not together or showing any signs of the bonding process which would normally take place. We carefully tried to encourage her to accept him, but this young and inexperienced mum simply did not want to let her foal suckle - it was clear that she had rejected him.”

Council’s project team and consultants had a busy afternoon discussing scheme’s outline design to prevent coastal flooding and erosion in Sidmouth

Police warning following East Devon burglaries

Police in East Devon have issued a warning to the public following a number of burglaries in the area.

An investigation is underway following six burglaries in the Sidmouth area since February, all of which have similar methods of entry.

Detective Constable Matt Burnell, said: “Over the past two months there have been six dwelling burglaries in the Sidmouth area.

“The vast majority of properties targeted are detached bungalows and entry is generally forced to windows at the rear of properties. It also appears that the offenders are focussing on stealing jewellery...

Mental health workshops for Sidmouth residents

A series of mental health workshops are being held by East Devon District Council in Sidmouth to help young people, parents and working professionals have a better understanding of mental illness and to educate them on the issues surrounding it.

All the workshops are being coordinated by Aaron Clark from East Devon’s Community Development service and Debbie Humberstone, founder and co-ordinator of The Project, a young persons’ mental health support group based in Axminster.

Council reminds dog owners to keep their pets under control at all times

East Devon District Council has recently been contacted several times by members of the public reporting problems caused by dogs being exercised without lead restraint in The Byes, Sidmouth.

From the information received, it appears that the dogs in question are not sufficiently well trained to be walked safely without a lead. In one incident, on Christmas Day, a person walking two large dogs behind Sidmouth College was unable to prevent them jumping up and frightening a girl walking with her family.

Updated plans for a footbridge to replace Alma Bridge in Sidmouth will be presented to local town councillors on Monday (6 November).

Devon County Council had put forward proposals for a structure over the River Sid which included short flights of steps at either end of the bridge.
