Brian to tackle ultra-distance cycle race across America

An on-call firefighter at Danes Castle will be taking part in the Trans-America Bike Race in June 2018 to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity and Wooden Spoon Devon.

The race involves cycling 4,300 miles across 10 US states in around a month.

Brian Murray retired as Chief Fire Officer from Highlands and Islands Fire Service in 2010 after a 30-year career, having served in numerous brigades and at the Fire Service College.

New street art improves look of community hub

Three former offenders have helped to brighten up a previously dull car park at a community hub in Exeter.

The group, who are all being supported by Dorset, Devon and Cornwall Community Rehabilitation Company (DDC CRC) as part of their sentences, have taken part in a street art course as they look to pick up new skills. They are helping to transform the old car park at Wat Tyler House community hub on King William Street into a ‘paradise’ garden area and have spray painted pink flamingos onto the wall. Volunteers rack up 81 years service

They look like ordinary people - different ages, backgrounds and interests.

What binds them together is that each is an Exeter Mid and East Devon Samaritan volunteer and remarkably they have served a combined 81 years.

Most of the six, who were presented with long service awards at the AGM of the charity’s Exeter branch this week, serve as listeners who respond to the thousands of telephone calls, emails, text messages received by the branch each year.

Revised schedule for Dartmoor rail service on Sunday

Rail services on the Okehampton Sunday Dartmoor Service will be running with a re-timed schedule this weekend (Sunday 11 June).

This is due to ongoing track speed restrictions between Coleford Junction and Okehampton.

The Summer Sunday Services, which are run by Great Western Railway (GWR) and funded by Devon County Council, will start and terminate at Exeter St Davids rather than Exeter Central.

Although the departure times are similar to the usual service, journeys will take around 15 minutes longer. Timings will be -

South West Apprenticeships Ambassador Network and Exeter College are hosting the Apprenticeship Expo 2017 for the third year running, as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

Exmouth's new recycling service starts tomorrow

Exmouth residents will soon be able to recycle up to as much as 60% of their household waste for weekly collection when a new improved recycling service starts in the town from Thursday (February 16.)

East Devon District Council has extended the number of items that households can now collect to include cardboard, mixed plastics, cartons/Tetra Paks and small electrical items.

The new additions mean householders are able to recycle more, throw away less rubbish and put East Devon at the very forefront of environmental sustainability.

Churches in Devon are inviting their local communities to help bring hope to some of the UK’s most vulnerable children this festive season by supporting their Christingle celebration in aid of The Children’s Society.
