Exeter is expected to benefit from a major economic boost from the Rugby World Cup 2015, City Council leaders have said. With Sandy Park in Exeter hosting three games of the Rugby World Cup, all indications show that spending in Devon's capital will increase significantly as a result. Latest research from The South West Research Company indicates that visitor spend within the Exeter economy grew by 16.90% to £195.6 million from 2011 to 2012 and the city attracted over 2.2 million visitors in the same period. "It is great to see that the visitor economy in Exeter has grown by so much in 12...

A local man is encouraging people to come together for the 2014 Hospiscare Men’s Walk to support the local charity who gave ‘outstanding’ care to both his mother and mother-in-law in their final days.

Exmouth based Peter Firth took part in the 2013 Men’s Walk raising more than £750 for local charity Hospiscare.

Peter completed the 10k distance with his brother-in-law Shawn, both walking in memory of their mothers who had died within weeks of each other at the Exeter hospice.

Peter said: “In late 2011, I sadly lost both my mother and mother-in-law to cancer. They...

Whitten demands fast start against Bath

Irishman Ian Whitten insists Exeter Chiefs can ill afford a slow start when they tackle local rivals Bath in Saturday's Aviva Premiership derby at Sandy Park (3.15pm).

Last Saturday it was Exeter's first half display which ultimately came back to bite them as they went down narrowly 17-16 against league leaders Northampton Saints.

And not for the first time this season, 26-year-old Whitten and his team-mates were left bemoaning a disappointing first 40 minutes as a key fault in their game plan.

“It seems to be a repeat thing against the top sides, we seem to sit...

The chance to be wined and dined alongside members of the Exeter Chiefs first team squad certainly proved a smash hit as over 300 females descended on Sandy Park for the latest Ladies Night (Thursday 30 January).

Chiefs keep cup qualification hopes alive

Exeter Chiefs forwards coach Rob Hunter praised his side as they alive their hopes of qualification in this season’s LV= Cup with a 36-22 victory over the Ospreys at Sandy Park.

Tries from Luke Cowan-Dickie (2), James Scaysbrook, James Phillips and Don Armand were the highlights for the Devon club, whilst skipper Ceri Sweeney weighed in with the remainder of the points.

The Ospreys, who countered with four tries of their own through Daffyd Howells, Morgan Allen, Matthew Jenkins and Tom Grabham, played their part in an entertaining tussle.

However, it was never...

Chiefs side to face Cardiff Blues

Rob Baxter wants his Exeter Chiefs side to wrap up their Heineken Cup campaign in style when they travel to Cardiff Blues in tomorrow's final Pool Two fixture at the Arms Park (3.40pm). With European qualification hopes of any kind all but extinguished with last weekend's 15-10 home loss against Glasgow Warriors, the Chiefs are still determined to prove their worth in European Rugby's top cup competition and record a notable double over the star-studded Blues. At Sandy Park in October, Baxter's men produced a devastating first 40 minutes to blow aside the Welsh region. Not only was the all...

Mumm seeks Chief's Response

Exeter Chiefs may not have finished 2013 as they would have hoped, but already skipper Dean Mumm is aiming to start the New Year with a bang.

Just days after coming unstuck 22-6 to Harlequins in Big Game 6 at a packed Twickenham, the experienced Aussie forward already has his sights set on Sunday's Aviva Premiership trip to London Wasps (3pm).

Determined to get Devon's finest back amongst the division's leading pack, Mumm says it's vital he and his team-mates respond in the right way at Adams Park.

“Sunday’s game certainly takes on greater importance now,” said Mumm...
