Carlton Power plans to build Devon and Cornwall's first low carbon green hydrogen hub

Carlton Power, one of the UK’s most experienced energy infrastructure development companies and the company who originated and developed the Langage gas-fired power station and the Langage solar farm (located eight miles east of Plymouth, Devon) has chosen to build its third green hydrogen hub in the UK on land within the Langage Energy Park.

Family and friends of a young woman lost to a brain tumour have visited a research centre where scientists are searching for a cure for the disease which took her life.

Mum Paula D’Souza from Exeter and dad Michael Bullous of Teigngrace, Newton Abbot, were invited to the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the University of Plymouth on Wednesday (27 April) to place tiles on the Wall of Hope in memory of Emma Louise Bullous, who passed away in January 2021, aged 23.

Devon backs Freeport proposals

Devon County Council has agreed its support for the development of the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport sites in the county.

The Freeport has the potential to unlock £314 million of inward investment and create more than 3,500 jobs by building on the area’s global reputation for marine innovation and advanced engineering.

House sparrows held on the top spot, but the jay surprisingly flew nine places up the results from this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s largest wildlife survey and gives RSPB scientists insights into how our garden birds are faring.

RSPB appeal for volunteers in Devon to help with vital pin badge collections

The UK’s largest nature conservation charity, the RSPB, is looking for volunteers across Devon, especially in the Plymouth area, that have a few hours to spare each month to help their cause.

As a vital fundraiser for the charity, pin badge collection volunteers play an important role in placing and checking on charity pin badge boxes in places like cafés, garden centres and shops in their local area.

Concern regarding undiagnosed liver disease in Devon

One in five adults in the South West could have undiagnosed liver disease, the British Liver Trust’s Love Your Liver mobile screening and scanning unit found after visiting the region in November.

The charity visited Truro, Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol and Cheltenham, and scanned passers-by who were interested in finding out more about their liver health. Of the 268 people scanned, 50 (19%) had a high reading and were sent to their doctor for further tests.

People across Devon are being reminded it’s not too late to have the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

More than thirteen thousand people across Devon are not fully vaccinated more than twelve weeks after their first dose. They include over seven and a half thousand people who initially had a first dose of the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

A study funded by Public Health England found that having only one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine gives around 30% protection against the predominant Delta variant but protection rises substantially after a second dose.

Teenage cancer survivors get post-lockdown lift with Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

Young people, who have been treated for cancer at The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and Derriford Hospital, enjoyed three days of sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust from Plymouth Yacht Haven, as the Trust aims to transform more young lives this summer.

Greendale vaccination centre volunteer Ian Aspinall has clocked up more than 100 shifts supporting the vaccine programme over the last five months. A retired police officer, he’s often there several days a week.
