We are delighted to welcome back to the Corn Exchange the amazing Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - for two performances. Eight Ukuleles, sixteen hands, thirty two strings, sixteen million minutes, one billion seconds, thirty years. In June 2015 the Orchestra had clocked up sixteen million minutes of ukulele action. By September 2016 they will have been active for one billion seconds. They play ukuleles, they sing, they say funny things, they whistle, but they bring a lot more to the table than that. Starring Norah Baring and Ugo Henning, it is an exciting melodrama, a tale of love and revenge set on the bleak landscape of Dartmoor. In the words of one reviewer, it “out-Hitchcocks Hitchock”. It has been restored from materials in the BFI National Archive...
Vaughan Williams' tribute to Tallis calls for a large string orchestra divided into three parts: the full string choir, a single desk from each section and a solo string quartet. The Tallis melody "Why fum'th in fight the Gentiles spite, in fury raging stout?" is one of nine included in the Psalter of 1567 for the first Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury. The theme is heard in its complete form three times and serves as the source for a wonderful miasma of variants and developments in this rich orchestral composition.
