Rainbow Living was delighted to recently welcome two prominent NHS England members to the charity’s Exeter Rainbow House.

Dr Dominic Slowie, National Clinical Director for Learning Disability, and Hannah Iqbal, Policy Advisor for NHS England Learning Disability Programme, approached Rainbow Living to find out more about the charity’s bespoke model of supported living housing and how they support tenants, and their families, in making decisions about their individual personal care.

Fire Service works with NHS to enhance patients' safety

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are delighted to announce that they have signed a partnership agreement with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust to enable NHS Practitioners to refer patients for free home fire safety visits. The agreement came about after the formation of the multi-agency Bariatric and plus size working group which was looking at how the NHS and Fire Service could work together to reduce risk in this client group. Walk-in Centre opening hours to be reduced

The opening hours of the walk-in centre (WIC) at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital are to be reduced from Monday 27 June.

The walk-in centre is run by Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT).

The WIC is currently open from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week.

From 27 June it will be open from 11am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. There will be no change to opening times at the weekend, when it will continue to be open from 7am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday.

NHS promises improvements to 111 service

Patients in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall have been promised improved NHS 111 services by South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust following a critical report.

The new commitment follows a warning notice and inspection report published today by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Since concerns with the quality and safety of its NHS 111 services were first raised earlier this year, the trust has been working with local commissioners and stakeholders to better manage patient safety risks. Advice for RD&E patients during the junior doctors' strike

Patients are being asked to attend appointments at Exeter's RD&E as usual during the junior doctors' strike (April 26/27), unless they have been told otherwise.

The walkout will see emergency care withdrawn for the first time in the bitter dispute over new contracts.

The strike starts at 8am on Tuesday until 5pm the same day.

It then resumes at 8am on Wednesday and continues until 5pm that day, when it ends.

There have already been four strikes this year, yet for the first time in NHS history this will be an all-out strike.

The University of Exeter has been named as the latest site to deliver Health Education England’s Masters programme in Genomic Medicine. Exeter will join nine other providers in the UK securing the institution’s position as a leader in the field.

Exeter will collaborate with the universities of Plymouth, Bath and Bristol, as well as the NHS Genomic Medicine Centres in the region, to deliver the masters programme to healthcare staff throughout the South West region.

Excellent results for Trust in NHS survey

The NHS Trust that runs community hospitals and community health and social care services across Exeter, Mid and East Devon ranks better than similar Trusts in nearly three quarters of all indicators, according to a national survey of staff published yesterday (23 February).

When compared to other Trusts that run acute and community services, the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust was rated better than average in 23 of the 32 key findings that make up the NHS Staff Survey for 2015.

£1m donation for cutting-edge medical research in Exeter

The University of Exeter Medical School has received a £1 million donation from The Dennis and Mireille Gillings Foundation towards its pioneering work in genetic disorders.

The generous donation will fund new staff to allow the Medical School to expand its research to improve patient care in the NHS and beyond, building its expertise in the diagnosis of genetic disorders, including in early pregnancy, and other innovative diagnostic testing.
