Lord Mayor commemorates Britain's oldest sensory garden

The Lord Mayor of Exeter unveiled a new sign detailing the history of Britain’s oldest sensory garden.

Belmont sensory garden was built in 1939 and is thought to be the first garden designed especially for the Blind worldwide.

The garden was restored in 2007 with a variety of flora chosen for their scent and texture including Chamomile, Mint and Lilac.

Newtown Food Festival

The first ever Newtown Community Food Festival takes place at Belmont Park on Sunday 8 September.

The multicultural event, from 12pm-4pm will include local stallholders selling a wide range of produce, including Indian, Asian, African, Mexican and Jamaican food, plus much more.

The day will also include family wildlife gardening and planting activities with Devon Wildlife Trust, live music, and a a cafe.

The event, free to enter, is organised by Newtown Community Association, and has been funded by Exeter City Council.

Newtown History Cafe

The history of Newtown will be revealed at the cafe in Belmont Park on Sunday 11 August. An exhibition, entitled ‘Newtown through the Ages’ will show how the area has developed over the centuries from the Roman period to present day. Newtown certainly has a lot more history than what might be expected.

The cafe is open from 2pm-4pm and is followed by a historical guided walk of the local area starting at 4.15pm at the hut in Belmont Park.

Newtown Art Café to feature music from the J Strings and Exeter Young Strings

Newtown Community Association is gearing up for an Art Café, which will take place this Sunday, 9 June at the main hut in Belmont Park from 2pm-4pm.

As well as a painting activity with Exeter Scrapstore, there will be live music mostly from young string player 'The J Strings' – which is the St James School string group – Exeter Young Strings, and also a young string band will be doing a few tunes.

After that, there will be an open session for anyone to play a few tunes.
