Vaughan Williams' Second Symphony has been described as the musical equivalent of Monet’s paintings of the sun rising over a foggy Thames. Actual London sounds fleetingly emerge from an exquisitely woven musical tapestry - the chimes of Big Ben, the cry of a lavender-seller. Central to the symphony’s success is the wonderful limpid scoring, which Vaughan Williams felt in later life that he had never bettered.

The Cathedral's three resident organists perform with our choir of children and adults in celebration of the organ's 350th anniversary year.
Following an extensive restoration (completed at the end of 2014) the organ will be back in action, taking a solo role, together with providing the accompaniment for the Cathedral Choir.
This popular concert takes place in the candlelit nave of the Cathedral.
John Scott is presently Organist and Director of Music at St Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York (where he directs the renowned choir of men and boys) following a long association with St Paul’s Cathedral, where he was Organist and Director of Music from 1990 until 2004.
A highly regarded choir trainer, composer and arranger, John Scott is widely recognised around the world as one of the leading recitalists, so we are extremely proud to announce his performance here in Exeter, the first recital on the newly restored organ.
