Arts Council chief exec to visit Exeter

Darren Henley, the Chief Executive of Arts Council England, will be in Exeter on 21 October visiting some of the City’s outstanding arts and cultural organisations.

During his trip Darren will visit Exeter Phoenix, The Bike Shed Theatre, Devon Library and Royal Albert Memorial Museum.

All of the organisations receive funding through Arts Council England.

Last year (2014/15) the Arts Council invested over £2.4million in Exeter, recognising the excellent work done in the city.

Featuring city landmarks, national landscapes and the work of the English visionary Cecil Collins, the new exhibition of Exeter’s Fine Art starting at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) on Saturday 24 October will delight art lovers.

Drawn from RAMM’s extensive collection of topographical prints, drawings and watercolours, distinctive city landmarks include Mol’s Coffee House and the Higher Market. The fine art collection also includes outstanding British landscapes and some of the finest are included providing dramatic views of Wales, the Lake District and Yorkshire.

Special sessions at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) help people with memory problems, their families and carers share experiences inspired by the museum’s objects and exhibitions, expanding horizons at a time when many people affected by dementia feel as if their world is shrinking.

In a lunchtime talk at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum on Wednesday 14 October, award-winning photographer Michelle Sank will reveal the extraordinary, and sometimes humorous, stories behind the images in her Touch-Line exhibition.

Tongan team takes time out

Ikale Tahi, the Tonga Rugby Union team are staying in Exeter for Rugby World Cup 2015.

Miniature book records epic journey

One hundred and forty years after samples from one of the world’s greatest journeys of scientific discovery were dispersed to experts across the globe, Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum is collecting records of the voyage into a single digital database.

Exeter's Royal Albert Memorial Museum has been shortlisted for the Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award

RAMM is one of only six museums to be shortlisted for this year's award – the biggest museum award in Britain.

The competition has been tough with a record-breaking 800 nominations this year. The six finalists have been chosen by a panel of experts. Visitors, staff, volunteers and city councillors all contributed to RAMM’s nomination. Now it’s up to a ‘mystery shopper’ family to road-test RAMM and judge whether it should be the overall winner.
