Exciting new library reading programme for under 4s aims to boost children’s love of books

An exciting new early years reading programme with stickers to collect has been launched in libraries across Devon and Torbay, aiming to inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Libro’s Friends is an extension of Libraries Unlimited’s hugely successful The Secret Book Quest, which was launched in 2021.

Both programmes have been created as part of Libraries Unlimited’s drive to boost the reading skills of children in the county.

An Exeter housebuilder is encouraging the community to embrace the nature on their doorstep by offering free bug quest kits to local children.

Redrow South West is inviting local children to take part in ‘The Big Bug Quest’ competition and collect a free bug quest kit* from St Michael’s Meadow, on Chudleigh Road.

The kits, which are available to collect throughout August*, include wildflower seeds to help local wildlife to thrive, a magnifying glass, a bug tick-list, and a pair of ‘make-your-own’ binoculars.

Banksy Champions Children’s Art Classes Launching in the Exeter Area

Globally renowned Graffiti artist Banksy said he was ‘blown away’ by art work produced by pupils at a Brighton art school that has recently launched in Lympstone and Exmouth. Bansky, who’s recent murals feature on Ukrainian postage stamps, went on to say that he was ‘wowed’ by the classes and that all the pupils were brilliant and had a bright future in art ahead of them.

Coughs and colds in children are common at this time of year and are usually relatively mild, but parents are being urged to get their children vaccinated against flu, which can be much more serious.

All primary school children, and some secondary school children (years 7, 8 and 9) are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school by school nurses.

Parents will receive a link to the online form from their child’s school. When invited by their school, parents must complete the online consent form for their child to get the flu nasal spray...

Exeter children’s charity shop celebrates grand reopening

Jelly, a charity shop in Exeter selling low cost, preloved children’s clothes, toys and books, has celebrated its grand reopening after refurbishment.

Part of local charity, Exeter Community Initiatives, the Jelly shop was officially opened by Jelly Bear. The fun packed day included a set from Exeter-based singer, Hannah Ruby, goodie bags for the first 50 customers, face painting, cakes and a giant raffle! The Donkey Sanctuary Sidmouth will host East Devon’s new travelling creative space – the Creative Cabin on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 August, offering visitors free hands-on activities and the chance to learn all about one of the UK's rarest bats - the grey long-eared-bat.
