Green Baroness, Jenny Jones, today backed local campaigners calling to bring the Railway network and its operation into public hands.

Local Green Party campaigners joined Union representatives at Exeter St David’s and Central Stations to greet commuters as they headed back to work. The action was one of many across the South West and other parts of the UK taking place in the wake of the annual hike in rail fares.

Diana Moore, the Green Party’s prospective parliamentary candidate in Exeter, joined today’s demonstration outside Exeter St David’s station.

Greens respond to redevelopment plans

The Green Party in Exeter has broadly welcomed the redevelopment of the bus station site, particularly the emphasis on leisure uses including a swimming pool, but has repeated their call for a new market square.

They have also welcomed plans to develop the site to BREEAM environmental standards and the swimming pool to passivhaus standards.

The Party says that such standards are crucial not only to tackle climate change but also to create buildings which are more affordable to run.

However, Greens question whether the current plans are economically viable and are...

South West Green Party has condemned the Tories for ‘abandoning onshore wind’ while at the same time wanting to change trespass laws so that shale gas exploration companies would be allowed to drill under people’s homes. Greens say the announcement by the Conservatives is even more alarming given that it follows hot on the heels of the recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This concluded that clean energy will have to increase threefold by 2050 if the earth is to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, with the emphasis on wind and solar power. Dr Molly...

SW Greens accuse MEPs of voting against flood protection

As floods continue to inflict damage and disruption across the region, South West MEPs are being accused by Greens of voting against important measures to prevent and tackle flooding proposed in the EU in 2012.

An EU resolution in 2012 built on directives (EU law) that called on Member States to, ‘draw up maps identifying all areas posing a risk of flooding… and the potential damage for local populations, property and the environment’. EU law has also said that National States must ‘prepare and implement flood risk management plans for each river basin district’ and ‘consider where...

The plans come as the rail authority had consider an alternative to the current coastal line after the recent storms destroyed an 80m section of track near Dawlish.

The potential route from Okehampton to Plymouth via Tavistock through areas of Dartmoor National Park has already come under criticism from some transport campaigners as it bypasses large areas of South Devon.

Calling for further rail investment in the Exeter Daily today , Transport Campaigner...

Time for public to take back Great Western franchise say Green

South West Green Party is calling for the renationalisation of the Great Western rail franchise when the current contract expires in two years time. The Green Party has long campaigned for the renationalisation of the railways. Green Party MP, Caroline Lucas, has recently launched a Private Member’s Bill in parliament calling for the rail network to be brought back into public...

The Green Party in Exeter is calling on Exeter City Council to ensure the bus station redevelopment provides an opportunity to showcase the best that Devon has to offer in local foods, artisan crafts and multiculturalism and diversity.
