Fly-half Gareth Steenson insists performance is key for the Exeter Chiefs this Saturday as they look to overcome rivals Sale Sharks in the Aviva Premiership (3pm).

Having returned to winning ways with last weekend's 38-33 win at lowly Worcester Warriors, Devon's finest can expect another stiff examination against the visiting Sharks.

With qualification into Europe's new-look Champions Cup very much up for grabs, the need to accrue vital Premiership points has never been more important with just three rounds of the domestic season remaining.

Irish fly-half Gareth Steenson admitted it was important for the Exeter Chiefs to rediscover their winning formula ahead of what is a crucial festive period for the club in the Aviva Premiership.

Winless in their five previous fixtures heading into last weekend, Rob Baxter's side not only defied the atrocious wintry conditions at Sandy Park, but also visiting Newcastle Falcons, to record their sixth victory in the top flight this term.

Just how far Exeter Chiefs have come in recent times can be underlined with a quick glance at their fixture list for the next month, so says star fly-half Gareth Steenson.

With Saracens first up tomorrow at Sandy Park (3pm), the Devon club will then embark on a run of games which sees them face Bath (away) in the Premiership; champions Toulon (home and away) in the Heineken Cup; before further top flight encounters with Newcastle Falcons (home) and Harlequins (away).

However, according to Irishman Steenson – now in his fifth year with the Chiefs – it’s a period in time that...

Hooker Jack Yeandle praised the defensive qualities of the Exeter Chiefs as they consolidated fourth place in the Aviva Premiership table with victory at Sale Sharks.

The Devon club made it five wins in six games in the top flight last Friday as Gareth Steenson's 18-point haul with the boot guided his side to a narrow 18-16 victory at the AJ Bell Stadium.

However, it was not just Steenson's lethal kicking which ensured victory for Rob Baxter's side - it was in defence where the visitors were equally as strong, repelling a strong second half display from the Sharks, who had...

Chiefs chase the (Cardiff) Blues away with a resounding win at Sandy Park

Exeter Chiefs 44 Cardiff Blues 29

Mark Stevens reporting from Sandy Park

A first half masterclass from the Exeter Chiefs gave them the perfect start to this season’s Heineken Cup as they blew away visiting Cardiff Blues at Sandy Park.

Rob Baxter’s side ran in five tries – four of them in the opening 40 minutes – to ensure maximum reward against the Welsh region, whose improved display after the break did at least glean them a try bonus point.

Skipper Dean Mumm, Matt Jess, Fetu’u Vainikolo, Ben White and Ian Whitten all crossed for tries, while Gareth...

Exeter Chiefs fly-half Gareth Steenson is raring to go

Exeter Chiefs fly-half Gareth Steenson believes the hard work the team have been putting in through pre-season will surface in their first pre-season match against Scarlets this Saturday.

The Irishman has said that the whole team have been impressing as they build towards the start of the new campaign and he is confident that everything will come together in a match environment. “Pre-season has been going really well, it’s been five weeks of hard work and the guys have been putting in some good scores in the gym and the fitness scores are right up there, so we’re at that point now...

Young rugby fan James gets his reward

London Irish fly-half Ian Humphreys may have ended up on the losing side following his side's recent visit to Sandy Park, but he has emerged as a real winner in the eyes of one young rugby fan. The 30-year-old back was greeted with a chorus of boos from supporters packed inside Sandy Park when he inadvertently kicked the ball straight into the face of schoolboy James Allan, who was watching his first-ever Chiefs game with his dad Nick and other members of his family. Immediately Humphreys gestured towards the youngster for his actions and even tried to find him following the final whistle...

Chiefs lose to Tigers but they were still grrrreat!

Seven days previous, Toby Flood left Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium licking his wounds as he and his fellow England colleagues saw their Six Nations dream end in tatters to a rampant Welsh side.

However, present day and the Leicester Tigers No.10 was back smiling again as his 12-point haul – courtesy of four penalties – helped the East Midlanders claim victory in a hard fought Aviva Premiership encounter at Exeter Chiefs.

Having exchanged three penalties with opposite number Gareth Steenson in the first period at Sandy Park, the 27-year-old landed a telling blow just ten...

Baxter singles Steenson out for praise

Irishman Gareth Steenson was singled out for praise by Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter after he produced a man-of-the-match display to help his side to a 27-16 victory at Aviva Premiership champions Harlequins. The 28-year-old fly-half was chief tormentor for the Devon club at the Twickenham Stoop as his 17-point haul went alongside second half touchdowns from Damian Welch and Luke Arscott. Exeter’s victory, their second in as many weeks, not only ensured they maintained their hopes of being amongst the division’s top six, but also enabled them to claim a league double over Conor O’...

Christmas has certainly come early for supporters of the Exeter Chiefs after it was confirmed two more of their senior stars have agreed new contracts with the Aviva Premiership.

Just days after full-back Luke Arscott committed his immediate future to the Sandy Park outfit, prop Brett Sturgess and fly-half Gareth Steenson have followed suit by agreeing similar two-year deals. The announcement is yet another welcome boost for head coach Rob Baxter, who has made no secret of his desire to tie down the futures of a number of his frontline stars.
