Beautiful gardens needed for fundraiser

Calling all keen gardeners! Green-fingered enthusiasts in and around Exeter are being sought by WESC Foundation, specialist centre for visual impairment, to take part in an exciting new fundraiser this month. The inaugural WESC Foundation Sensory Open Gardens event is looking for people with beautiful, interesting or unique gardens to sign up and open their garden gates to friends, family and their local community in an effort to raise vital funds to help children and learners of little or no sight.

The beautiful Bickham House gardens are open for the National Gardens Scheme from April until October.

Bickham Gardens recently featured in The Independent newspaper and its beautiful landscaped lawns and flower beds are well worth a visit.

Lapford & District Horticultural Society open their gardens on the 28th and 29th of June in aid of Devon Air Ambulance Trust. Twelve unique parish gardens can be viewed including the school and allotments. Nine gardens are located in the village, with three about a mile away.

The best way to rid a garden of snails

Gardeners wanting to rid their spring flowerbeds of pesky snails can ditch the beer traps and egg shells and instead develop a strong throwing arm. This is according to a new study published today, 16 May, in the journal Physica Scripta, which has used statistical models to show that removing snails out of the garden by a distance of over 20 metres or more is just as effective as simply killing the snails. Exeter couple prepare for annual Garden Party

An Exeter couple are inviting people into their garden in May in aid of a local charity Hospiscare.

Mr and Mrs Macan will be opening their garden at Orchard House, Deepdene Park on Saturday 24 May between 2pm and 5pm for a ‘’Garden Party’’ open to everybody.

Jessica MaCan has been involved with Hospiscare for 10 years whilst her husband Matthew is Orchard House’s gardener (along with a little extra help!).

Pecorama's Head Gardener will be giving expert tuition on how to produce beautiful Hanging Baskets and Troughs.

The Workshop will take place in the Top Spot Marquee between 11am and 4.30pm on both days. Visitors can join in at any time during each session.

Killerton sparkles after dark

Every Friday and Saturday throughout December, visitors to Killerton house and parkland can enjoy the festive spirit and colourful light displays.

Three majestic 20ft Christmas trees greet visitors at the entrance to the house, while the parkland has a magical feel as spectacular coloured lights create beautiful shapes and shadows among the trees. Dawlish Strand opening celebrations

There was double celebration in Dawlish with the official opening of Dawlish Strand coinciding with the town’s Christmas light switch-on.

The £1.5 million regeneration scheme, which was a joint initiative between Devon County, Teignbridge District and Dawlish Town Councils, has rejuvenated the Strand area since it was completed in the summer and it has been welcomed by traders.

Devon County Council Chairman, Councillor Bernard Hughes OBE, conducted the opening ceremony ahead of the festive lights switch-on.
