World class athletes support Devon youngsters

Over the next four years, world class athletes will be supporting over 2,300 young disadvantaged people in Devon.

The Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, founded by double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, has been working in Devon for several years now.

The trust has announced it will work with 2,300 disadvantaged young people through the mentoring schemes Get on Track and On Track to Achieve.

These schemes aim to help young people realise the attitudes needed to live a positive life and helps them to develop the skills required to exit into sport, training, education...

Are you looking after someone else’s child?

Devon County Council is using Private Fostering week, which runs from 4 to 10 July, to encourage people to get in touch if they have made private arrangements to look after someone else’s child, or children, for 28 days or more.

Private Fostering is when a child or young person under 16 years old (or 18 if they have a disability) is looked after for 28 days or more by someone who is not a close relative, a guardian or person with parental responsibility.

A close relative includes parents, step-parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents.

Lynx escapes from Dartmoor Zoo

A Lynx has escaped from Dartmoor zoological park this morning (Thursday 7 July).

Police were informed at 10.20am that the large cat had escaped from its enclosure in Dartmoor Zoo.

Staff and volunteers have been searching the park and the animal is now thought to have left the grounds.

The lynx is a wild cat approximately the size of a large domestic cat, grey/silver in colour.

Police are urging the public to call 999 immediately quoting log 252 if it is sighted.

The animal should not be approached as it could become dangerous if alarmed or cornered...

Local University team win international robotics competition

Harper Adams university students came second in an international robotics competition.

The team, made of four MEng Agricultural Engineering students, entered the competition at the Field Robot Event in Gut Mariaburghausen in Habfurt, Germany.

The students to enter were Joe Allin, 23, Ali Taylor, 24, Tom Lindley, 23, and Josh Mathews, 23, who were all accompanied by the Head of off-road Vehicle design and Final Year senior tutor Dr Ianto Guy.

Harold the Giraffe, the mascot of children’s charity Life Education Wessex (LEW), is going on the road for a week from Monday 11th July to spread the word about an exciting online resource available without charge to schools from September.

‘Harold’ the Giraffe puppet will be making a whistle-stop tour of as many schools as possible throughout Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire before the end of the academic year. Exeter College students impressed at the coveted national finals in London of the toughest debating competition in the country.

A landmark event in the UK’s education calendar, the college students beat off tough competition to reach the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters National Final at the Museum of London.

The students from Exeter College won their place at the national finals after being crowned winners of the West and South Wales regional final of the competition.

Devon farm supplies cheese for Virgin Trains’ new onboard menu

Quicke’s cheddar cheese is to be featured on Virgin Train’s new menu.

The menu, developed for Virgin trains exclusively by the award winning chef James Martin will feature Quicke’s cheese for first class customers.

Community helps Mill Museum win fund

Uffculme-based Coldharbour Mill Museum is the latest winner of RGB Building Supplies’ Well Built Community Fund following a public vote where the local community was asked to show their support.

Up against groups based in Paignton and Wiveliscombe, people in the local areas were asked to vote for who they would like to be the lucky recipients of £1,000 worth of building materials from RGB.

More than 400 votes were received with the museum coming out on top.

Man wanted for breach of tagging order

Police in South Devon are seeking a 21-year-old man who is wanted for a breach of an electronic tagging order.

Dennis Ham from Buckfastleigh is currently sought by police and officers are following a number of lines of enquiry to ascertain his whereabouts and intend to arrest him and return him to court when he is located.

He is described as a white man around 1.70m (5’7”) tall, of medium build with long hair and a beard.
