Entries open for Michelmores charity run

Organisers of the 12th Annual Michelmores Charity Run have announced that entries are now open, but are urging runners to apply early as they are expecting a bumper starting line-up.

The 5K event begins on Cathedral Green before taking in Princesshay, the Guildhall Shopping Centre, back to the Northernhay memorial statue and on to Rougemont Gardens, for a short uphill sprint finish at Exeter Castle. Invitation to help improve victim services

Organisations that want to be involved in the commissioning of services to victims after April 2015 are being given the opportunity to join in the improvement of victim services. From April responsibility for the commissioning of most victim services across the peninsula will fall to Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg who is asking groups to register their interest in providing victim services in the future. Fore Street Closed after Flat Fire

Fore street in Exeter was closed on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a top floor flat. Three appliances from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were at the scene at around 14:08 yesterday (April 17) after being called to the fire involving the window sill and walls of the residence Police closed the road between Market Street and Bartholomew Street while fire crews made the building safe.

£5,000 for East Devon's Rural Communities

Rural communities in East Devon could see up to £5,000 of funding from the district council to build or improve village halls and community shops.

The grants can be used to help refurbish, improve or even build village halls, community shops and community buildings in rural areas (those in towns are not eligible). Scammers Pretending to be Police take £12,000

Police are urging householders to be on their guard following incidents of a phone fraud where unsuspecting victims are duped by people posing as police. In the latest incident on Tuesday, an elderly man from Paignton was duped out of £12,000 by someone posing as a police officer from the Metropolitan Police who claimed that someone had been arrested in possession of his bank cards. This follows another incident in North Devon in March when a Bideford couple were duped out of more than £30,000 by people posing as police. 'Fantastic' Jason Shoemark to leave Chiefs

Rob Baxter has hailed Jason Shoemark as a "fantastic servant" after he confirmed the New Zealander will leave Exeter Chiefs at the end of the season.

Signed in 2010 from Super 15 outfit Highlanders, the experienced 33-year-old centre has played an integral part in helping the Devon club to establish themselves not only in the Aviva Premiership, but also across Europe in both the Heineken and Amlin Challenge Cups.

M5 Closed by Car Fire

Large traffic jams have formed on the M5 Southbound following a car fire near Exeter this morning.

6 Fire engines in attended the scene on M5 junctions 24 Bridgwater to 25 Taunton when a car and caravan became engulfed in flames.

The smoke from the blaze was reported to have made driving difficult due to reduced visibility.

Police initally closed M5 north and southbound J24-25 because of the fire and asked that Motorists find alternative routes due to heavy traffic building in the area.

£207,220 boost for disability sport in Devon

Active Devon has been awarded a grant of £207,220 from Sport England to develop inclusive sporting opportunities for disabled people.

The Inclusive Sport programme is designed to increase the number of young people (aged 14 plus) and adults regularly playing sport as part of Sport England’s wider commitment to increasing regular sport participation by disabled people.

Council 'flaws' allowed paedophile to offend

Severe flaws in child safeguarding allowed a convicted paedophile to continue abusing two young victims, according to a report released today. The independent report, commissioned by the Devon Children Safeguarding Board covers the services repeated oversight during a five-year period of abuse and the circumstances leading up to the abuser coming into contact with his victims.
