Nicola Oakey, (24) has beaten over 1,300 candidates for a place on the ground-breaking Homebase Garden Academy training programme.

People are being invited to ‘charge around’ Exeter as Electric Friday hits the city.

Exeter City Council has joined up with sponsors Westerly Exeter BMW to encourage more people to use electric cars.

On Friday (12 December), shoppers using the City Councils car parks will be able to find out more about Electric Cars, and charging facilities provided by the Council as well as an opportunity to see the new BMW i3 and i8, provided by charge point sponsors Westerly Exeter BMW.

Exeter Business Improvement District proposal launched

Over 50 business representatives were present at the launch of the Exeter BID proposal document which was revealed at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum on Monday (8 December).

Those attending the event learnt more about the BID and what will be included within the BID Business Plan which will go out to all voters in January 2015.

The business plan identified three main priorities: marketing and events, welcome and safe as well as looking after businesses.

The new seafront hotel for Exmouth, Premier Inn, has started recruiting for staff and is looking for local people to fill the equivalent of 23 posts following the successful recruitment of a manager and assistant manager.

Following the sale of the former Elizabeth Hall to Whitbread plc as part of the regeneration of Exmouth seafront the 60-bed hotel is being built and will open on 2 March 2015.

New fitness trail set for Exeter park

An exciting new fitness trail is set to be installed in an Exeter park.

The trail, which will incorporate outdoor fitness equipment as well as standard exercise challenges, will be installed at Cowick Barton playing fields. The project has been made possible thanks to a £41,620 grant from Alcoa Foundation, and local company Alcoa Howmet.

Young people in Exeter are being given the chance to apply for Wolseley UK’s customer service apprenticeship scheme via a vacancy at its Plumb Center branch on Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter.

Wolseley UK provides construction products and materials through a nationwide branch network, including Plumb and Parts Center, Pipe Center, Climate Center, Drain Center and William Wilson. Stagecoach Group is one of the top 20 most admired businesses in the UK, according to an authoritative annual survey of corporate reputation.

The transport group, which operates bus and rail services in the UK and North America, was rated 20th out of nearly 240 businesses across 24 sectors in the Britain’s Most Admired Companies (BMAC) 2014 Awards.

Exploring the impact of TASERs

Social Scientists at the University of Exeter have called for a greater comparative analysis of the impact of TASERs used in law enforcement. The next generation of the electric-shock weapon used by police forces in England and Wales is currently under review.
