Rowe hails 'fantastic' year for Exeter Chiefs

Exeter Rugby Club chairman and chief executive, Tony Rowe OBE, heralded a “fantastic” past year – on and off the field – for the Aviva Premiership club when addressing the club’s members at their Annual General Meeting held at Sandy Park.

Building on the success of previous years, Mr Rowe remarked on a hugely positive 12 months for the region’s premier sporting club, highlighted by the fact that they were the most profitable club in the Premiership, returning a profit of £1.2m.

Rugby income, which was bolstered thanks to the staging of three Rugby World Cup fixtures and...

Rob Baxter says it’s imperative his Exeter Chiefs side keep their “foot on the pedal” after securing back-to-back victories in the Aviva Premiership in the past fortnight.

Tomorrow, Baxter will be looking for his team to maintain that winning formula when they travel to Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium (7:45pm).

It is – according to the Exeter head coach – one of the most testing assignments on the top-flight calendar and he’s warned his players to brace themselves for a real battle up in the North West.

“I’ve said for the last few weeks that we’re starting to get...

Hard work pays dividends, says Horstmann

Kai Horstmann believes the hard graft being put in on the training field is now bearing fruits out on the pitch after Exeter Chiefs made it back-to-back wins in the Aviva Premiership on Saturday.

The experienced back-row forward was part of an impressive Chiefs line-up that brushed aside visiting Worcester Warriors 57-22 at Sandy Park.

The Chiefs ran in eight tries during the game and recorded a maximum haul for the second successive week, having accrued a similar tally against Newcastle Falcons the week previous.

The victories have helped to position Rob Baxter’s...

Rob Baxter says the time has come for his side to put their foot down and ‘accelerate’ their way through this season’s Aviva Premiership campaign.

After a somewhat mixed start for last season’s beaten finalists, Exeter Chiefs resume their top-flight programme tomorrow evening when they make the long trip to Newcastle Falcons (8pm).

Buoyed by last weekend’s convincing 62-25 win over Cardiff Blues in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, Baxter is hoping the feel-good factor of that ten-try victory will ensure his side arrive in the North East with a spring in their step.

“This is the...

Chiefs side to face Cardiff Blues

Exeter Chiefs coach Ricky Pellow has described Sunday’s Anglo-Welsh Cup clash with Cardiff Blues as a ‘must-win’ encounter if the Devon club harbour any hopes of qualification to the latter stages.

Undone a week ago at Harlequins 29-15, the Chiefs return to home soil this weekend determined to not only bounce back from that result, but also rediscover their winning formula after a testing few weeks of results across the board.

As is the case in this tournament, the Devon club are not afraid to let youth have it’s chance and blooded a handful of academy graduates off the...

Chiefs' Jack Clarke shortlisted for national award

A young man from Exeter Chiefs’ HITZ programme has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

Jack Clarke is one of three finalists shortlisted for the HITZ Community Impact award supported by Wooden Spoon. This award will be presented at the HITZ Awards on 28 November.

The Community Impact Award is all about the time and commitment given by a HITZ young person through volunteering.

It looks not only at the impact of the young person’s volunteering in the community, but also the impact of the volunteering on the HITZ participant themselves.

Chiefs sign up Fijian flyer Matawalu

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter believes new signing Niko Matawalu can add some real ‘X-Factor’ to his backline after he today agreed a deal until the end of the season.

The Fijian international will head to Sandy Park from Aviva Premiership rivals Bath Rugby and will join up with his new team-mates once the current autumn internationals are concluded.

Equally at home either on the wing or at scrum-half, Baxter believes the 27-year-old is a great addition to the Chiefs make-up and is excited at what he can bring to the club moving forward.

“Initially Niko’s...

Derby Day defeat hurts Steenson

Gareth Steenson insists he and his Exeter Chiefs team-mates will pick themselves up despite suffering yet more late heartache during Sunday’s Aviva Premiership clash with rivals Bath.

Semesa Rokoduguni’s converted try – seven minutes into added on time – saw the Chiefs undone right at the death, eventually going down 13-10 in front of a capacity crowd at Sandy Park.

Not for the first time this season, Rob Baxter’s side were again left to wallow in yet another narrow reverse that has left them seventh in the current Premiership standings.

However, skipper Steenson...

Chiefs v Bath sold out

Sunday's Aviva Premiership clash between Exeter Chiefs and Bath Rugby is now officially sold out.

The final tickets for the much anticipated encounter were sold this afternoon and will mean over 12,500 fans will be packed inside Sandy Park.

It will be the first meeting of the two clubs this season with the Chiefs - currently fifth in the Premiership standings - looking to overcome third-placed Bath, who have lost only once under new Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder.

Exeter Rugby Club chairman and chief executive, Tony Rowe OBE, said: "Games between ourselves and...

Exeter Chiefs 27 Gloucester 27

Damian Welch’s last-gasp try snatched a dramatic draw for Exeter Chiefs in an enthralling derby with Gloucester at Sandy Park.

With less than a minute remaining, Gloucester’s hopes of a second Aviva Premiership victory of the season were dashed when the Chiefs mauled their way over in the left-hand corner to tie the scores at 27-27.

Even then Rob Baxter’s side could have won it at the death, but the normally deadly Gareth Steenson was unable to land the tricky conversion from wide on the touchline.

Following a disappointing 15-6 defeat at the hands of Bath Rugby...
