Community unites to support disadvantaged schoolchildren

Generous businesses, organisations and individuals have come together to support hundreds of disadvantaged children across the Exeter area in a fantastic display of unity.

In just 10 days, a total of almost £30,000 has been raised to buy devices for children most in need and most at risk of falling behind in their education due to the pandemic. Now, thanks to that generosity, primary schools in Exeter and children attending the Cranbrook Education Campus will be able to access a library of devices which will be loaned to children who are learning from home.

Exeter closes the loop on throwaway plastic bags

Exeter has become the first council in the UK to turn plastic bags collected from the kerbside into litter bin sacks, it has been revealed.

Green-thinking Exeter City Council has partnered up with plastic recycling company Jayplas for the UK first.

The ‘closed loop’ project sees waste polythene bags collected from households across the city and trade customers, sent to Jayplas’s new film sorting plant in Smethick.

Once there it is sorted into polymer type and colour, before being turned into recycled granules by washing and compounding the materials.

Council considers bringing the running of leisure facilities back in-house

Council Leader Phil Bialyk has announced that he wants the running of the city’s leisure facilities to be brought back under the control of the City Council.

Staff working at the city’s leisure sites, which are currently closed due to coronavirus restrictions, would transfer to...

First steps to replace old bridge on Exeter Quayside taking place

The first steps to replace an old bridge on Exeter Quayside that had come to the end of its life have taken place this week.

The wooden Mallison Bridge, which spans the medieval leats on the north bank of the River Exe, has been removed as its timbers had become rotten and unsafe to use.

Planning permission for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge was given in December 2018 and a new structure will be built as soon as adequate funding has been identified.

The old bridge had been closed since the end of 2018. Signs were erected and people advised to take a diversion...
