One of a a handful of new recruits brought in by head coach Rob Baxter during the close season, James is clearly keen to make his mark in English rugby having spent the past six seasons with the Cardiff Blues.

The challenge of tackling English rugby’s elite sides was a key factor in the 26-year-old’s decision to join the Chiefs – and he knows the hard work put in by himself and his new colleagues during the current pre-...

Bateman signs for the Chiefs

Exeter Chiefs have bolstered their options ahead of the new 2013/14 season with the acquisition of Greg Bateman from Championship side London Welsh.

The talented hooker, who celebrates his 24th birthday today, has agreed a two-year deal with the Devon club after spending the past two seasons with the Exiles following previous stints with Dorking, Rosslyn Park (loan) and the Harlequins Academy. Bateman is Exeter’s fifth new signing following the earlier captures of Fetu’u Vainikolo (Connacht), Dave Lewis (Gloucester), Tom James and Ceri Sweeney (Cardiff Blues). And Bateman’s move to...

After five years playing in the Welsh capital with the Blues, Sweeney is keen to experience a new playing challenge and feels his move to Sandy Park will offer him the perfect opportunity of testing himself in another tough rugby environment. Chiefs are busy preparing "to hit the season hard", says Hepher

Exeter Chiefs assistant coach Ali Hepher is expecting the Aviva Premiership to be even tougher when it returns to full-on action in early September.

Last season the Chiefs finished sixth in arguably their toughest top flight campaign to date – an outcome which ensured the Devon club would be competing amongst Europe’s elite in the Heineken Cup once more. However, Hepher believes the 2013/14 season will see the standard rise even further and has issued a timely warning to his players of what to expect. “It always cranks up a notch,” said Hepher. “If you stand still you fall behind...
