New research on heart disease in children

The University of Exeter’s Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre has announced its involvement in a three-year project to investigate the effects of exercise on children with congenital heart disease - one of the most common types of birth defects that affects up to nine in every 1,000 children born in the UK today.

The project is the first research study of its kind in the UK and involves a partnership between Toshiba Medical Systems Ltd, the University of Bristol, the University Hospital Bristols NHS Foundation Trust‘s Clinical Research and Imaging Centre (CRICBristol)...

Hedge-laying is good for wildlife, and can be fun and good exercise for humans too.

That’s the message from EDDC’s Countryside Team as they invite people to fill the limited spaces on a hedge-laying day on 1st November 2013.

Much of the work carried out by Countryside staff and volunteers is practical and hands-on at the nature reserves across the district. Sites are managed with people and wildlife as the priorities and the team are keen to keep traditional practices alive as far as possible.

Nature Conservation Officer Steve Edmonds said: “A laid hedge has several...

I do not enjoy exercise classes!! As a doctor I am well aware that I ought to exercise more and spend far too much time in front of a computer or TV.

I even belong to a large and famous gym which offers many kinds of classes. On the rare occasions that I have made myself try one of the classes I am bored after five minutes and find myself looking at the clock and waiting for it to finish. I can’t bear the dreadful ear bashing music and the routines are too complicated.

Everyone else seems to be able to remember the steps and look good in their Lycra designer gym clothes. I...

Department of Health announces £5 million of funding to encourage Brits to 'Get Active To Get Healthy'

One year on from the Olympics and Paralympics more than half the adult population is doing the recommended amount of physical activity, but worryingly more than a quarter are not doing even 30 minutes a week and putting their health at risk, Public Health Minister Anna Soubry has warned.

Only a third of boys and a quarter of girls meet the recommendation for at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day and latest statistics also show that almost 30 per cent of adults are active for less than 30 minutes per week - prompting a call for everyone to get up and get active.

What is TEEN Beauty?

Let's face it—teens are overwhelmed with pressure by mates, classmates and themselves to look like unrealistic representations of people who should not be role models. Whether they are trying to copycat the makeup look of a reality show sexpot or watching the most recent video of their favourite pop star's lyrical exploration about sex, many teens are just following the crowd—and looking much older than they should. Many teens and adults alike don't realise that these celebrity 'ideals' of beauty go through hours upon hours of skin treatments, skincare, hair and...

Thinking you're old and frail may speed up ageing process

Older adults who categorise themselves as old and frail may be speeding up the process, according to Exeter University researchers. A study conducted by Krystal Warmoth and colleagues at University of Exeter Medical School, is being presented at the British Psychological Society Annual Conference in Harrogate. Krystal interviewed 29 older adults in the South West of England face-to-face. Interviews conducted asked about their experiences of ageing and frailty. They found attitude could lead to a loss of interest in participating in social and physical activities, poor health,...

Teenagers urged to exercise to ward off bone disease

Playing football or running for at least three hours a week could help teenagers counteract the potential damage to their bone health caused by prolonged spells of sitting.

An international team, including an expert from the University of Exeter, has found evidence that adolescents who spend long periods engaged in certain sedentary activities are more likely to have low bone mineral content in parts of the body where it can be an indicator of the risk of developing osteoporosis.

In the research, which has just been published by BMC Public Health, the team...

Flo Gets Fit Week 1: Weigh-ins and Hill Sprints

Until fairly recently, my diet and fitness had taken a bit of a back seat to vodka and bacon sandwiches. But about this time last year, fed up of feeling fat and needing a week-night hobby that didn't involve Eastenders, I joined the David Lloyd gym in Exeter. And because I pay a fortune for it and signed up to a year's contract, I felt I didn't have much choice but to go!

It took me a little while to work out that getting fit didn't necessarily mean getting slim, but once I'd realised this, I signed up to the Slimming World plan to give me a bit of guidance on how to eat healthily...
