Bob Rutter, aged 76, and his wife Sue have lived in Seaton for the past 18 years. After a 40 year career as a pub landlord, Bob was enjoying an active and sociable retirement playing bowls and golf when he was diagnosed with a rare cancer, lymphoma in the brain.

EDDC in top 30 best recycling councils in the country

The extraordinary achievements of East Devon households who are now recycling more than ever before following the introduction of a new recycling service this year has won local, national and international environment awards for the district.

Since February, the district council, in partnership with its contractors SUEZ, has rolled out a new recycling service to all 68,700 East Devon properties and extended the range of items residents can now have collected from the kerbside every week. Christmas tree recycling in East Devon

East Devon is recycling Christmas trees at eight different sites in this week.

The trees will be shredded and the chippings will be used in local parks and gardens.

Take your Christmas tree along to one of the following recycling events:

Appeal after serious crash close to Devon border

Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a serious collision near Bridport in Dorset, 12 miles from the east Devon border.

At 8.23am yesterday (Sunday 17 December 2017) a three-vehicle collision occurred on the A35 at Morcombelake involving a silver Citroen C3, a silver BMW 320 convertible and a silver Vauxhall Astra.

The road was closed for several hours to allow collision investigators to carry out a full and thorough examination of the scene.

The driver of the Citroen, a 77-year-old woman from Bridport, sustained life-threatening injuries...

Council takes successful enforcement actions against fly tippers

East Devon District Council’s Environmental Health team has recently served fixed penalty notices on three people responsible for fly tipping, as well as a member of the public seen throwing litter from a lorry.

In the first case, a resident from the Tiverton area, who fly tipped waste in Forest Gate car park, Ashclyst Forest, Killerton, claimed that a commercial waste collection company had taken her waste, but she was unable to provide any evidence to support this and has since paid the £200 fine.

New ‘mindfulness trail’ launched at popular nature reserve

An East Devon beauty-spot has become the venue for a new ‘mindfulness trail’, promising visitors the chance to get away from some of the worst stresses and strains of modern life. The trail has been established at Devon Wildlife Trust’s Bystock Pools nature reserve, in East Devon, and is the brainchild of local woman Clare Carter. Bronze award as Tickety-Boo shines

Ottery St Mary coffee shop and children’s play kingdom, Tickety-Boo collected its first ever gong in the Devon Tourism Awards.

The coffee shop received a bronze award, which means it is recognised as being in the top three café/tea rooms in the county, judged on such elements as inclusivity, customer service and sustainability including local sourcing. Ghostly goings-on in Ottery St Mary

Halloween has come early at The Volunteer Inn in Broad Street, Ottery St Mary with some mysterious shenanigans.

On two occasions candles used for the restaurant tables have relit after being extinguished the night before.

The first time, cleaners discovered two candles alight even though staff were adamant they had extinguished them. On the second occasion, candles on two adjacent restaurant tables were burning - even though landlady Jacqui Down had herself made sure they were put out.
