Police issue weather warning to drivers in East Devon

Police have issued a warning to drivers in East Devon not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Snow is still falling in the area, making driving conditions extremely hazardous and motorists have been advised only to make essential journeys.

Road conditions are said to be difficult anywhere east of Honiton – particularly on the A375 Honiton to Sidmouth Road and the A3052 in the Seaton area.

Officers have dealt with a number of minor collisions.

East Devon student achieves 100 per cent attendance

An East Devon sixth former is being honoured this week for what is thought to be a unique attendance record.

Mel Ayres did not miss a single day of lessons in the five years she spent in the main school at Axe Valley Community College.

Mel is now in the first year of the college’s sixth form studying for ‘A’ levels.

Attendance officers at Devon County Council cannot find another single instance of 100 per cent attendance over five years at a secondary school and so Melissa’s achievement may be unique in the county.

This Thursday (6th December) at 2pm, Mel...

Safety risk means cliff fall road will not re-open

An East Devon coastal road closed by a cliff fall during heavy rainfall in the Summer will not re-open, Devon County Council has confirmed.

Old Beer Road in Seaton has been closed since 12 July after a 25 metre section of the road fell away by around three metres.

A geotechnical report was carried out earlier this year by Devon based experts Frederick Sherrell Ltd. Its findings suggest that the collapse was triggered by the prolonged rainfall, saturating the weathered mudstone and leading to a “block” failure. It also advises that further slippage is...

Rural Devon: Dancing out of Isolation

2012 saw the launch of an unprecedented countywide project aimed at tackling one of Devon’s most prevalent social issues. But how has dance been a powerful weapon in the fight against rural isolation?

In 2004 the Countryside Agency (which has now become Nature England since 2006) published a report entitled 'Breaking Down Barriers' which investigated the effects of rural isolation on many rural communities in Devon. Rural isolation is widely defined as the lack of access to vital public services, transport, jobs, training opportunities, education or leisure activities due...
