The Dissenters Graveyard will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm on two weekends - 14th/15th September and 21st/22nd September.

From about 12.30 on the afternoon of Sunday 15th we are exploring a high-tech method of reading worn and lichen covered monument inscriptions. Reflectance Transformation Imaging is a method for revealing surface detail being used and explored in the Imaging Suite at Exeter University. “Saints’ Rest” – the Dissenters’ graveyard located in Magdalen Street - closed its gates to new burials 164 years ago.

More recently it has been the subject of a four-year restoration project carried out by volunteers of the Exeter Dissenters’ Graveyard Trust (EDGT).

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the graveyard was the final resting place for members of Exeter’s Unitarian congregation who worshipped at George’s Meeting House in South Street – now a public house owned by JD Wetherspoons.

Exeter Dissenters Graveyard open to visitors next weekend

The Dissenters Graveyard in Exeter will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September as part of Heritage Open Days.

This is an opportunity to walk through the nearly restored graveyard and browse through the range of information on the histories of the Graveyard, of Dissent, of the monuments and the people associated with site.

At 2.30pm on Saturday, the West Gallery Quire in costume will sing hymns and psalm settings of the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The Dissenters Graveyard will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 8th July.

Visitors can view the near-completely restored Graveyard, now dignified with gates and railings; inspect transcribed copies of many of the grave inscriptions and will be able to read short biographies of some of those buried there.

Between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September vistiors will be abel to see work in progress to reverse the ravages of time and vandalism and what more needs to be done, view a collapsed underground vault and the entrance to an intact underground vault, inspect transcribed copies of many of the grave inscriptions and read short biographies of some of those buried there.

Dissenters Graveyard wins Lottery support

Exeter Dissenters Graveyard Trust (EDGT) has received £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Phase 2 of the restoration of the Dissenters Graveyard in Magdalen Street, Exeter.

This phase, which starts in late May, will continue the process of rescuing the graveyard from dereliction.

Led by volunteers from the local community, the project will repair gravestones and monuments, install wrought iron gates, put railings on the side with a sheer drop, repair and re-point walls, and remove intrusive and damaging tree stumps.

At least 1,300 people are buried at this site on the corner of Magdalen Street and Bull Meadow Road.

This is the year of the 4 Rs - the Exeter Dissenters Graveyard Trust team will be repairing, rebuilding and re-bonding the broken fragments of some of the nearly 100 monuments on the site and re-pointing boundary walls. And they would love to meet potential volunteers willing to spend half a day being trained and at least a couple of days over the summer on some of the...
