Being as it’s Local Business week I’m focussing this article on the many benefits of buying local, and why everyone should, seek out and support their weekly farmers markets. Buy from the local corner shop. Eat, drink and meet friends at local independent cafés; and find your gift purchases from the small, local designers or artisans. The recipients of the latter will be far more thrilled with the individuality of the gift, rather than something which is mass manufactured.

Team Nads raises over £22,000 to help youngsters with cancer in Exeter

Nadia Hobbs, 18, from St Thomas, celebrated the end of her cancer treatment on 13th May with family and friends at Sawyers, Exeter.

Together they have managed to raise a staggering £22,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust, which will help to transform the lives of young people with cancer in Exeter.

Nadia Hobbs is a student at Exeter College, which has chosen Teenage Cancer Trust as its charity of the year.

Nadia has continued her childcare studies whilst going through her treatment, and her diagnosis has had such a life altering impact on her that she has decided to work...

Luxury watches stolen in Exmouth burglary

Police in Exmouth are investigating a burglary that occurred in the Salterton Road area on the evening of Saturday 14 May 2016 between 10pm and 11pm.

A number of wrist watches, jewellery and cash were stolen from the property.

The watches and jewellery are distinctive and of high value. Police are asking anyone who has been offered for sale any of the items listed below, or anyone who has seen anyone with such items, to contact them.

Local auction houses, antique dealers and jewellers are asked to be especially vigilant.

More trains between Exeter and Exmouth

Great Western Railway (GWR) is running extra trains on Sundays between Exeter Central and Exmouth, from 15 May. Trains will run every half hour through most of the day on Sundays throughout the year, instead of the previous hourly service; with a number extending to Exeter St Davids. All services will call at Digby & Sowton, Newcourt, Topsham and Lympstone Village stations. Morning trains to Exmouth and afternoon trains back will also call at Polsloe Bridge, providing more opportunities for a seaside day trip to Exmouth. As part of our schedule of special summer classes, we're offering a lovely session of knotty bracelet making! Perfect for gifting as friendship bracelets or keeping all to yourself.

We’ll be teaching one of our favourite designs, a bracelet made from knotting and beads and a button clasp. There will also be the chance to learn how to make an ever useful sliding knot fastening, as seen on our knotty bracelet kits. The great thing about this workshop is that knotting is one of the trickiest things to learn without having somebody show you, so a couple of hours spent being taught it...

Temporary lights overnight on Bridge Road

Temporary traffic lights will be introduced overnight on Bridge Road in Exeter this evening (Tuesday 17 May) from 11pm until 5am tomorrow morning.

Over the past few weeks a process known as hydro-demolition has been undertaken on the Countess Wear Flood Relief bridge, where high pressure water jets have been used to cut away the concrete but leave the reinforcing steel intact.
