Samaritans dedicate room to charity stalwart

The Samaritans has dedicated the training room in its Exeter premises to a volunteer who has raised over £75,000 for the charity over 30 years.

Ann Pearce-Mariner (pictured), from Haven Banks in Exeter, has since the 1980s led a team of other volunteers creating hand-made cards, soft toys and blankets.

All proceeds from their sale have gone to the Exeter, Mid and East Devon branch of the charity - and that has been over £75,000 in total.

In the 1980s and 1990s Ann and her team sold the crafts at the old Exeter market for several days a week. Now she specialises in...

Since the formation of a task force earlier this year, a number of key developments have already taken place. Fewer people now live rough and survive on the streets of Exeter and reports of anti social behaviour have decreased.

StAG: Exeter’s Street Attachment Group adopts a multi agency approach to tackle one of its key priorities to reduce the number of people living and surviving on the city’s streets. It does this by promoting access to resources to help rehabilitate, home and get people involved in activities away from the streets.

An audit carried out last year showed...

Killerton volunteers stitch new life into old chairs

Dedicated National Trust volunteers are spending hundreds of hours creating hand-stitched tapestries for chairs inside Killerton House.

The group are revamping 16 chairs each with an intricate design of the Acland family’s coats of arms.

The coats of arms help to tell the story of the Acland’s – an old Devon family dating back to the 12th century.

The designs also identify the chairs that visitors can use and add to the welcoming feeling inside the Aclands’ former family home.

The seat pads will have hardwearing needlepoint designs that are unique to Acland...

Urban birds are less afraid of litter than their country cousins according to a new study co-authored by a University of Exeter academic.

The research, which highlights one way in which birds adjust to urban settings and published in the journal Animal Behaviour, shows that corvids - the family of birds which includes crows, ravens and magpies - are more likely to show fear in relation to unfamiliar objects than other birds.

However, if they and other bird species have previously encountered similar objects they are able to overcome some of their fear.
