83-year-old lady mugged and pushed to the floor

Police in Exeter are appealing for information after an 83-year-old lady was mugged after she had just got off a bus and was walking to her home.

The incident occurred between 9.30am and 10.00am this morning, Wednesday 16th January, in Willey’s Avenue, off Alphington Road, Exeter.

The victim was approached as she was walking home, pushed to the floor and had her handbag and contents stolen.

The lady suffered a suspected fractured femur and lacerations to her face and head and was conveyed to the R D & E Hospital for treatment.

Plans revealed for Devon’s dementia care Centres of Excellence

Families of residents at a Devon care home have welcomed new plans to tranform the home into a new dementia care Centre of Excellence.

Plans for the first two of Devon County Council's Centres of Excellence, at Mapleton in Newton Abbot and Woodland Vale in Torrington, go on show this week.

Open days at the homes are giving residents, their families, as well as staff and others, the first opportunity to see the plans.

They are the first of up to ten Council homes to be redeveloped over three years in their £11.2 million improvement programme.

Outlining its plans to cope with population growth, climate change and new environmental legislation, South West Water has published its proposed business strategy for 2015-2040.

NHS Devon urge "at risk" people to get free flu jab

The NHS in Devon is urging people who are in ‘at risk’ groups to visit their GP to get a free flu vaccination if they have not already done so this winter.

People who are in the clinical at risk groups are 11 times more likely to die if they get flu than a “healthy” person – for some groups, like those with chronic degenerative neurological diseases, that risk rises to 40 times.

Volunteers at a Devon charity clocked up a thousand days of help during 2012.

People who gave their time to Paignton Zoo Environmental Park and Living Coasts in Torquay helped raise over £72,000 and gave more than 24,000 hours - equivalent to 2.75 years, 143 weeks or over 1,000 full days.

For the year ending in October 2012 volunteers gave 24,142 hours - 2,677 more than in 2011. Volunteer Coordinator Neil Thomas-Childs is hugely impressed by these figures:

Exeter Police seek witnesses after fatal collision

Update: The man has been formally identified as David Michael Howard Hill, aged 64 years, of Harbertonford near Totnes.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died in a collision on Monday evening. At about 18.10 hrs on Monday (14th January 2013) a single vehicle Road Traffic Collision occurred on the A379 at Peamore on the outskirts of Exeter, Devon.

A car travelling from the direction of Marsh Barton, Exeter towards Kennford left the carriageway to the offside entering the central reservation.

Two attacked in Honiton for being Good Samaritans

Police are investigating an assault in Honiton High Street which left a man and a woman requiring hospital treatment.

The victims, from Honiton, were attacked after they attempted to break up a violent argument between another man and woman.

The arguing pair, plus another woman, assaulted the female victim outside Costa Coffee and the man outside the war memorial.

The 41-year-old man suffered serious injuries including broken ribs and the 40-year-old woman sustained black eyes.

Police and students to restore classic police car

Police and students in south Devon have undertaken a drive to restore a police car to its former glory.

The 1999 Ford Escort was retired out of police service in early 2006 and lay unused and deteriorating until 2008 when it was acquired by the police Heritage and Learning Resource (the Historic Collections of Devon & Cornwall Police) based in Okehampton.

In 2011 a sponsorship deal was struck with three local companies who agreed to supply restoration materials and the car was taken to South Devon College in Paignton who had agreed to supply the labour to return the car...
