Fore Street Closed after Flat Fire

Fore street in Exeter was closed on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a top floor flat. Three appliances from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were at the scene at around 14:08 yesterday (April 17) after being called to the fire involving the window sill and walls of the residence Police closed the road between Market Street and Bartholomew Street while fire crews made the building safe.

M5 Closed by Car Fire

Large traffic jams have formed on the M5 Southbound following a car fire near Exeter this morning.

6 Fire engines in attended the scene on M5 junctions 24 Bridgwater to 25 Taunton when a car and caravan became engulfed in flames.

The smoke from the blaze was reported to have made driving difficult due to reduced visibility.

Police initally closed M5 north and southbound J24-25 because of the fire and asked that Motorists find alternative routes due to heavy traffic building in the area.

£207,220 boost for disability sport in Devon

Active Devon has been awarded a grant of £207,220 from Sport England to develop inclusive sporting opportunities for disabled people.

The Inclusive Sport programme is designed to increase the number of young people (aged 14 plus) and adults regularly playing sport as part of Sport England’s wider commitment to increasing regular sport participation by disabled people.

Council 'flaws' allowed paedophile to offend

Severe flaws in child safeguarding allowed a convicted paedophile to continue abusing two young victims, according to a report released today. The independent report, commissioned by the Devon Children Safeguarding Board covers the services repeated oversight during a five-year period of abuse and the circumstances leading up to the abuser coming into contact with his victims. Scrumpstock Festival heads for Bicton

Scrumpstock, a cider, scrumpy, ale and music festival, is coming to Devon.

The festival, previously entertaining cider drinkers in Somerset, will be held at Bicton College over the weekend of 24-25 May.

Churches and schools plant poppies to mark First World War

Hundreds of churches and Church of England schools across Devon are planting poppies as part of First World War commemorations organised by the Diocese of Exeter.

With the support of Paignton based Sutton Seeds, the Diocese has sent out 500 packets of the Northlew poppy seeds. Northlew, a small village near Okehampton, lost proportionally more of its enlisted men than anywhere else in the UK, when 24 died out of the 100 strong adult male population.
