An unlikely combination of football and craft have provided the inspiration for Souvenirs from Home, an exhibition at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.

Gilded football boots and decorated silk team shirts are amongst the craft created by football supporters working with artists across the country.

Souvenirs from Home is the culmination of Home Ground, a three-year project which celebrates the cultural heritage of football clubs with nicknames inspired by the local craft industries that have shaped their communities.

Six members of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen have come together to respond in their own creative way to the plight of the bees and the inspirational example of the rooftop beehives on Princesshay shopping centre in Exeter.

This is a new exhibition of ten artists whose work goes 'beyond the book'. It runs from Saturday 5 April -Sunday 8 June at Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey Tracey, TQ13 9AF.

The Guild's curator Saffron Wynne worked with independent artist Su Blackwell, whose delicate 3-D book sculptures have featured in the Guardian, to help select work for the exhibition. They wanted to see what artists think about books, at a time when the printed page is being replaced increasingly by digital media and aspects of traditional crafts such as book-making are seen as out-dated and rare.

Celebrating local pride and heritage

Devon Guild of Craftsmen have been awarded over £136,000 to support a tour of their exhibition and community project Home Ground, which explores the link between crafts, local industry and English football clubs.

The leading contemporary crafts organisation based in Bovey Tracey was one of 11 successful projects announced as part of Arts Council England's Strategic touring programme funded by the National Lottery. The programme supports arts organisations to tour high quality work so more people can experience and enjoy it.
