At this time of year, charity shops across Britain see an influx of donations. As new toys and gifts have arrived in many homes over Christmas, they quickly become the new favourites as older ones are abandoned for the latest playthings. Recycle Devon urges residents to make a pledge and ‘wear what you have’

Devon residents are being urged to breathe new life into their old clothes and ‘wear what you have’ to help reduce their carbon footprint and to pass on clothes they no longer want to keep them out of the bin.

By making at least one of a series of pledges, residents will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win one of 10 Duronic Fabric De-Bobblers.

An estimated 10,000 items of clothing are thrown away in the UK every five minutes - and last year £2.7billion was spent on clothes that were worn just once.

Recycle Devon wants Devon residents to join the ‘Donation Generation’

Devon residents are being invited to join the Donation Generation by pledging to reuse and repair clothing as much as possible and reduce the estimated 10,000 items of clothing thrown away in the UK every five minutes.

Every pledge made will be entered in a prize draw on 2 March 2020, to win one of 10 Upcycling and Repair kits.

The kits consist of handy items to help repair and upcycle clothing easily such as fabric scissors, iron-on patches, repair tape, cottons, needles and buttons.

Come along to Amnesty International's second annual Clothes Swap in Exeter!

What:

The name clothes swap is pretty self-explanatory: donate clothes and you can take any items you fancy in return! Donating in advance means that you are able to get a reduced entry ticket on the day, or if you're unable to donate, turn up anyway and pay £4 entry to take part in the clothes swap. There will be coffee, cakes, and a live DJ, so even if you're not into clothes, there's still something for you!

Seven of Hospiscare’s charity shops in Exeter, have joined forces with national careers app Debut and TV fashion expert Amber Butchart and will feature the ‘Dress to Impress for £10’ initiative from Monday 15th October.

The national initiative is being showcased at charity shops across the UK and will help improve job prospects for millions of individuals by providing access to interview outfits for only £10 and educate job seekers on correct interview attire.

Trading Standards donates counterfeit clothes mountain to charity

Around 5,000 seized items of counterfeit clothes have been donated to the charity Planet Zero by Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service.

The mainly counterfeit goods, which include track suits, t-shirts, sweatshirts and trainers, are the result of seizures by trading standards officers across the area.

On Friday trading standards officers packed a lorry bound for the charity, which collects unwanted clothes for a good cause, full of clothes.

The clothes were stored at the service's secure compound in Somerset.

Prize draw prompts 1,800 pledges to 'love their clothes'

A Crediton curate has won Recycle Devon prize draw by pledging to reduce the amount of unwanted clothing she throws away.

The Reverend Helen Drever of Crediton Parish Church won a £45 laundry ‘bucket’ made from ‘upcycled’ sailcloth donated by Sails and Canvas in Topsham.

The draw was part of the Love Your Clothes campaign which aimed to change the way Devon consumers buy, use and dispose of their clothing.

The £10 vouchers winners are Sandy Parle from Seaton, Kathy Tagg from Exeter and Jane Rosewell from Clyst Honiton.
