Many Devon businesses don’t know which way to turn, as they continue to struggle with recruitment difficulties on top of rising costs of commodities, energy and fuel.

Businesses in hospitality and leisure especially, mainstays of Devon’s local economy, are continuing to find it difficult to recruit, says Stuart Elford, Chief Executive of Devon & Plymouth Chamber. And part of the reason for that is because property is seen to be too expensive and out of reach, dissuading many people on lower incomes from moving to where the vacancies are.

Exeter heads scheme to create new generation of ‘business-aware’ academics

The University of Exeter has been awarded £5 million for a project that aims to instil researchers with improved awareness of the benefits of collaborating with business.

South West tech accelerator returns after £1m first year success

The only tech business support programme for the whole of the South West of England is launching for its second year, after helping companies secure £1m.

Tech South West StartUp Studio 2021 saw the likes of Paranimo, Eate, Groundwaves, Milbotix and a clutch of other early stage pre-seed companies go on to raise £1m of grants and investment since completing the programme - with some still actively fund-raising; seeking another £1m!

Now StartUp Studio is back and open to new entrants. Companies must have been trading for less than two years to qualify.

CARL Bennett from Ogwell in Newton Abbot has returned to work at a Devon-based family-run printed-packaging company as its Production Operative after 18 years (August 2022).

A duo from the University of Exeter Business School have today (Thursday August 11) launched the next generation of bias detection software for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) systems.

Funding to help boost resilience of rural economy

Farmers and landowners in the region will be able to access help to adapt to changes in agricultural grants, thanks to a £2.6 million support programme.

Following the success of earlier phases of the Future Farming Resilience programme, Devon County Council has received Defra funding to expand the initiative.
